We caught up with the brilliant and insightful D’vyne B a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
D’vyne, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my newly anticipated EP, Black Heart. Everyone has been waiting on that project for the longest and it’ll be dropping very soon! The backstory is so complex, yet gravitating. I talk so much about the reactions of being fed up with being taken advantage of, lied to, and manipulated by those you trusted most, along with sensitive topics such as suicide, abuse, and depression, specifically on songs like “DSRPCT” and “Family Ties”.
I also have sh*t-talking songs like “Who Knows” and “Needs” where I’m boasting about who I am, my character, my accomplishments, and why no one can see D’vyne.
These songs go through a story with double entendres, lyrical complexities (making you listen 5 times to catch it), and the ability to visually see what’s happening, and immediately connect.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m D’vyne, a recording artist + serial entrepreneur. I mainly specialize in the hip-hop/rap genre, but I have a hint of R&B in my music. I own 3 businesses, being the Founder/CEO of a music production company, Vice President of a marketing consulting company, and the Founder of an upcoming AR-based luxury clothing brand. In my music, I talk about my fantasies, whether they are dark and twisted, or big and beautiful. I also speak about real life events that have occurred in my life, implementing the element of story-telling.
I believe what sets me apart is being black, being a woman, and also very young.
I started my journey at 14 seriously, and since then, I’ve been able to explore what powers I can strengthen through art. Now, being a young adult, it’s starting to piece together and I’m very unapologetic about who I want to be in the world.
And guess what? Who’s going to stop me? No one.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
At the age of 13, I was being physically and emotionally abused by my father. It was a very difficult time in my life, as I was also a rebellious teenager, but I still don’t believe that I deserved what I went through. As a result of that and other events that occurred in my life, I dealt with suicide, depression, and anxiety. This lead to me showing symptoms of ADHD and generalized anxiety disorder.
I decided to take my power back, even just recently.
I used my music as a muse to deal with what I felt was necessary to heal. It took a while, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made in my entire life.
I’m not perfect, as I am still learning and growing, but taking that step was necessary for my healing process to really start.
When I feel alone, I turn to my pen, and say what I need to say.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There have been so many times when my life has pivoted. But as of recently, I’ve just relocated to Brooklyn, NY from Memphis, TN to attend Roc Nation School of Music. It was a scary move, but I knew deep down that it was time. Time to elevate my businesses, time for new, fresh air, time to make my mark on a bigger landmark.
So far, I’ve already been to tap into the modeling scene, land gigs to expand my network, and gain clientele for my businesses.
What did Drake name one of his songs? “Life’s good”.
