We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ordinary Things a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ordinary , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
We are currently working on our first full-length album. It’s been a dream for years that we just kept putting off due to a lack of time and funding. During the pandemic, John spent a lot of time working to learn how to record and mix songs at home.
He’s got such a natural talent for it and we’re proud to say that when the album is finally done (hopefully next year!), it will have been a 100% DIY endeavor.
We’ve been able to spend time reworking some old songs and writing new material, so it’s going to be really special to hear all these songs together once it’s finished.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We started creating music together as “Ordinary Things” in late 2016 after the previous band we had been in together ended. For a long time, I think we felt a bit boxed in as an acoustic act since it’s just the two of us. It took us a while to find our sound and to feel confident in what we were doing.
We haven’t played live since early 2020, but in many ways the break from shows has been a blessing in disguise. We’ve been able to experiment with different sounds and instruments without worrying about how it would translate to a live setting. At this point, our main goal is just to make music that feels authentic and fun to us and hopefully someone somewhere will connect with it.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Obviously, the internet is an amazing tool and we have been able to learn so much about recording/mixing just from reading and watching professionals online. We found this guy on youtube named Pete Johns who shares all about music recording, producing, etc., we have him to thank for solving just about every obstacle we’ve run into while trying to record our album at home.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Creating in itself is cathartic and I think necessary for survival…To me, the reward is taking whatever it is I’m feeling or struggling with and turning it into art of some kind. It’s so special to make something out of your personal experience and then have it connect with someone, or make them feel understood, that’s an incredible thing.
