We recently connected with CJ Prince and have shared our conversation below.
CJ , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Writing music came natural to me at a young age. Over time I learned how to properly structure a song from working & studying other artist. I learned everything in its proper time. Along the way I built great relationships with some wonderful people and I really wouldn’t want to have sped up that learning process at all. The skills that I think are most essential to me as a artist include understanding the business, networking, song structure/terminology and understanding how to use some of the various DAW programs. The only obstacle that will ever be in my way is myself. I control my own destiny. Therefore me learning more depends on how hungry I am.
CJ , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was inspired to music by my mother who worked as a radio disc jockey for the local radio station in my hometown of Jackson Tennessee. From there my love for music grew. I started writing and recording my own music at the age of 9 by using blank cassette tapes, and two radios I put close together. One radio would have an instrumental on a cassette tape. I would press play for the beat. I would use the other radio as a microphone using the blank cassette tape and pressing play and record on the radio. My music is made to make people feel good. To inspire, to heal, to build up, to make people want to elevate into the very best version of themselves. The substance within my music is what separates me from everyone else. My music touches on various topics from relationships issues, racial discrimination, systematic injustices, building wealth, to raising children. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come due to my consistency & not giving up. Expect to hear my music and feel the same. You will receive motivation & you will be inspired. Know that my music will have a positive impact a person’s journey to becoming a better individual.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is one making a living doing what I love to do. The second rewarding aspect is being able to be a blessing to others. Building up the community I’m from. Creating jobs, providing food, housing, education, healthcare, and recreation for the youth.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal that drives my creative journey is having the ability to create generational wealth for my family. Motivating people from different backgrounds to remain inspired. To not give up during tough times. To be an example of hard work, dedication, & consistency does pay off.
