We recently connected with Juliet Piper and have shared our conversation below.
Juliet, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I’m happiest and feel the most like ME when I am creating. It’s my number one priority and at the center of my heart. Right now I’m a full time songwriter/composer, artist, podcast host, and entrepreneur, and I feel exactly where I am supposed to be.
Anytime I’ve tried to stray away from music, creative projects, or entrepreneurial endeavors to do something I was “supposed” to be doing, it never felt aligned. My biggest sign to come back home to myself and my passions happened after one job left me both injured and repeatedly sick. A concussion and bronchitis three times in one year will really shake you up! I know that’s a dramatic example, but I was fighting so hard against my intuition and desires that I believe it finally caught up to me. I’ve never looked back after that.
I always recommend people figure out what they love most and then build a life and a job AROUND that as much as possible. It’s a very different energy to do what you love most and have a side hustle (or two, or three) that supports it than be burnt out by a career you don’t love and barely have time for your art/joy. If you’re an artist, you have to bring your work forward! Nothing feels better.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Juliet Piper, and I am a full-time creative artist and entrepreneur. I’m an original folk/pop singer-songwriter, a professional writer/composer, and the co-host of the popular podcast Goddess Hangs, which is a magickal world of its own.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles into a very musical family and started releasing songs and playing gigs around town at the age of 15. Over the next 10+ years, I played main stage at festivals, heard my songs on major local radio (KROQ and KCSN) as well as international top 20 play, and had original songs placed on MTV, Pretty Little Liars, and in various short films. I’ve composed multiple songs for Sesame Street and have been featured as a singer and writer on an international song with Pitbull. I’m currently working on an original folk EP that will be released before the end of 2022.
Goddess Hangs, my other passion, is my podcast with Sadie Olson where we make magick, mindset, and manifestation more relatable and fun. We’ve build an incredible community of witchy babes, and we support our audience in connecting to their intuition and making life magickal. Through our courses, programs, online community, and in-person retreats, we provide intuitive mentorship and focus on inner power and personal development. We also have TONS of fun!!
In short, I’m the ambitious sparkly witchy babe who writes songs around the clock and loves making art and creating magick.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’m obsessed with the idea of creating a legacy that outlives me. Songs that people can play in their homes and feel understood in 10, 20, or 100 years, empowering ideas that get passed on through generations, beliefs and perspectives about magick and manifestation that make the world a better place. My vision is really grand and perhaps even divinely delusional, but it motivates me SO much to imagine that I’m making my great great grandchildren’s lives better because of the work I’m doing right now.
I highly recommend zooming out and creating some context if the immediate results you crave aren’t visible (yet)! Focus on your legacy. Focus on your WHY.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I never expected to pivot from a musician-only to a musician/entrepreneur/intuitive witch/podcast host. And yet here we are! I bumped up against a lot of resistance at first because my identity felt so rooted in music only, and I was honestly so scared to share these new sides of myself with the world. But when I couldn’t deny that my heart was pulling me in a new direction, I realized that change is safe. That new identities are safe. That we are all complex beings who can be more than one thing.
If you’re feeling called to pivot in any way, listen to your intuition and trust it. You’re allowed to have, be, and experience it all. You are allowed to try something new. It’s ok if people don’t know a new side of you yet: Trust yourself, and give them a chance to fall in love with it.
The love, happiness, and fulfillment that has overflowed into my life since I pivoted has been unbelievable.
