Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to JOANNA PURVIS. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
JOANNA, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
It’s a lifetime learning process for artists or art businesses. I have a Bachelor of Art and design degree from Tsinghua University Beijing, China. I’m learning from every project and client. My interest in art started at an early age. From the age of 5 or 6 I showed my interest in sketching and doing simple pieces of art at home and in school.
This was developed during my college years and subsequent interior and graphic design periods. I owned my own graphic design company at age 26, and used my artistic background in this company.
In 2005 I moved to the US and created my own art supply business working with various designers in Houston. This has continued and I have gained experience working in different aspects of services including art repair, portraits, murals and personal custom artwork.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As previously stated. Ability to adapt to any number of styles. Interact with all levels of clients, from designers to personal clients looking for guidance in evolving their artwork visions.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I recently had a personal client approach me who was looking to create an image of a farmyard scene of the home he grew up in. He had no idea of how this could be created but had a number of little sketches of buildings and a picture in his mind of the land the buildings occupied and the various other surroundings such as pond, trees, road. To facilitate the creation of his scene I created a digital image and worked with him over a number of iterations to develop the scene to his final satisfaction. Final version even included the addition of farm animals.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Previously I have used Facebook as my main form of marketing on social media. Posting images and videos of the development of the process of my art creation. More recently I have supported this with the use of Instagram and a marketing app named Bark. All marketing information is related back to my company website. Become familiar with the various social media tools, and post regularly to develop a “following” where you can get feedback on your postings.
