We were lucky to catch up with Allison White recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Allison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Absolutely! I do so many things that don’t fit into the box of your typical wedding photographer. First— I help construct your timeline for your wedding day! If my couples are working with a planner & coordinator, I work alongside them to prioritize the moments that are important to the couple. This includes adding extra space for breaks where my couple can have a few minutes to themselves during their wedding day to reconnect and soak up their time together. I believe in capturing a couples’ authentic connection and love, so I work diligently to facilitate moments and experiences where their emotion can shine through. I’m a firm believer that genuine love seeps into the small moments of the day. Its holding hands or whispers, a hand on the small of your partner’s back, the intimacy and details of your love is what I aim to capture in order to properly tell your story.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My first name is Allison but most people call me Allie or Al. I’m a wife and mom, and a passionate creative. I started doing photography as a hobby in 2019 and fell in love with capturing couples! I studied like a madwoman and practiced as much as I could until my confidence was stronger, and then I took a leap of faith and started a business! More recently, I’ve niched down to weddings, elopements, and couples photography only. The only exception to this rule in my business is when I do sessions for Mustard Seed Ministries, a non-profit that links photographers with families who have children battling cancer to create their dream photoshoots.
At the end of the day, this dream is all I think about.
I really am enthralled by my couples’ love stories and finding néw ways to tell them. Each time I get a couple in front of my camera, my goal is to make them comfortable to be themselves completely. I create space for genuine experiences and emotion to take place, rather than just posing portraits and rushing forward. My work is ethereal, dreamy, romantic, powerful, and dramatic.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I started my side hustle as a way to be a stay at home mom, while helping to make ends meet. After a while, it could no longer be considered a side hustle. I did 16 weddings my first year in the industry(2021) and will close this year with 31 weddings and elopements! I think the thing that helped me to scale into a business was “doing things scared”. While I’m not the first person to think this way, I told myself early on that I didn’t want to make decisions out of fear— because as someone who struggles with anxiety I will always be afraid of something. So when something new comes my way and I question my ability or skill, I do all the preparation I can ahead of time to ensure my success, and then I do it— even when it’s scary.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I have built my reputation by showing up for my couples and anticipating their needs before they have them. I show up in person ready to make magic happen, and sometimes I have to fight tooth and nail to make sure the couple has the day of their dreams. One of the things that has come as a result of that are incredible client reviews and clients willing to rave about their experience with me. By the time I arrive to cover weddings I feel like an old friend to the couple because communication has been so good leading up to the wedding. I also work hard to make sure that my client experience is packed full of valuable tools to help couples prep for their big day, and complimentary surprises sprinkled in along the way. I’m now booking 2023 weddings and elopements Nationwide. Reach out and let’s plan your dream wedding!
