We were lucky to catch up with Dalby Biehl recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dalby, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has Covid resulted in any major changes to your business model?
During the pandemic, I really focused on writing and developing my ability to create music. I wrote a song every day in order to keep creating and hone my craft. I was in 8th grade during the start of the pandemic and now I am a junior in high school, and I have not gone back to full-time in person school since COVID-19. The adjustment I made during the pandemic regarding my education to focus on my passion and creativity was one of the best things that could have happened since I am able to pursue so many more opportunities than I would have been able to, despite the hardships of being a teenager through the pandemic.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Dalby and I am a 16 year old singer/songwriter and musician. I started playing shows at small venues when I was 11 years old and began writing my own songs at 12. I have always had a passion for music and it is such an incredible outlet for me to express emotions that are difficult for me to put into words during everyday life. My main goal is to connect to people, maybe only one person, and to make people feel understood because music has always been so important to me and I know how important it is to everyone else. Not only is music and writing songs my passion, but I also am lucky enough to have surreal experiences every day performing, traveling, recording, and participating in events that I never could have imagined I would be a part of. I am incredibly grateful for everyone around me and everyone who has supported and encouraged me. I am most proud of my ability to adjust and to keep working hard and developing during every experience I have had, and what I want people to know about me is that I am a normal teenager. I feel deeply and I just want to have fun, and I hope everyone is able to see and hear that with my music.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My manager, David Gates, actually worked for my mom in the corporate world (which is really funny). He was previously involved in the music business in A&R and management, and he asked my mom who her favorite artist was. Obviously, my mom said her daughter, AKA me, and he didn’t believe her because I was just a 13-year-old kid. My mom proved him wrong when he and his wife, Necia, came to one of my shows and he was very impressed. My parents did not know much about the music industry, which is a shrewd environment, so David became my manager and he and his entire family are my second family. I love every single one of them and I am so incredibly lucky that he saw what he saw in me. Everything that I have been able to do, including performances and studio sessions and traveling have all been because of him, and I am so grateful.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There are so many moments that feel incredibly rewarding as a creator and an artist. One of my favorite examples of these would be filming music videos for songs that I have worked on for long periods of time. Something about combining the lyrics and music of a song with the visual aspects of wardrobe, setting, and environment is such an incredible feeling. I have filmed two videos, one being ‘angelic’ and the other was ‘blanket’. Both shoots were so different due to the songs and the messages behind them, but they were equally amazing and fun. I used to hate anything relating to style or fashion, but since becoming an artist with a brand and connecting with my stylist (Ellie Byers), I have loved incorporating visual style with my music.
