The uncertainty of entrepreneurship causes many entrepreneurs to put off starting their business. For others, losing a job or other economic hardships push them starting their businesses earlier than expected. In our conversations with thousands of entrepreneurs we’ve seen so much variety in when, how and why people started their business and so we wanted to share a wide variety of views and reflections on the question of whether these folks wished they had started sooner or waited longer before starting their businesses.

If I could go back in time and start my creative career sooner, I definitely would in a heartbeat. I started taking creative photos with my husband in 2019 and loved learning how to style and pose the outfits and accessories I already owned. I was a huge fan of Disney and had just moved down from Massachusetts to start a new adventure of sorts. Read more>>

Part of me wishes I had started sooner, but at the same time, I might not have the same people in my life as I do now had that been the case. I moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University in Fall 2017, but didn’t really start playing out of the Belmont bubble, so to speak, until 2021 after graduating. When I started playing writer’s rounds, I started to meet and connect with so many more artists and writers, so I feel like I may have been farther along in my journey had I started doing that earlier. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism with a minor in marketing/advertising. So when I graduated, I thought the latter would be the career for me And for a good number f years, it was. But after leaving the employed corporate world, I struck out on my own. It was more difficult to acquire clients on my own. Moreover, the length of time to get creative material created and approved would be maddening. Not to mention the time it often took to get paid. Meanwhile, I had also been blessed with the talent to draw, which I come by “genetically,” since both my parents were artists. Read more>>

I actually do wish I had started my business sooner. I absolutely love working in this field and with my clients. A few years ago I lived in Alaska and the people around me did not support my dreams. They told me social media was useless and that I wasn’t going to make anything of myself if I pursued it. That was a waste of time. Sadly I didn’t pursue it for the first two years I wanted to. However, fast forward two years. and my business is thriving. I finally put aside everything people were telling me and started this business for myself. It was the best decision I ever made and I hope that others who are experiencing the same as I did will also be able to pursue their dreams. Read more>>

When I think about how I started my business, it was out of necessity. I was wondering for someone, and unexpectedly had to start working for myself. I do wish sometimes that I started a little later, so I had things lined up better. I had to learn a lot of things in real time. It was truly on the job training. It is one thing to be a Junior Brand Strategist. It is another thing to then have to push yourself into business owner. Absolutely! Starting FDS Drum Services has been the best thing I’ve ever done both personally and professionally. Before officially moving to Nashville in 2019, life was a whirlwind. I think it happened as it needed to, but I would have honored it more had I had a different perspective.
