Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dawn Charleston-Green. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dawn, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of my company is Dawn of a New Day 365, LLC. Of course, a portion of this was taken from my actual name, Dawn. I said if I ever had a mission of any kind, I would name it Dawn of a New Day. However, Dawn of a New Day is a common term that most people have heard. Every NEW DAY has a DAWN – a beginning. That’s the reality of it.
However, dawn is not just the morning, but a very specific time of the morning. Dawn is the breaking of day just after the darkest portion of the night. Dawn is considered the first glimpse of light you see after all previously seen was darkness.
Though my name has been Dawn for 48 years now, I will admit that I didn’t truly understand its meaning and connection to me until I was 45. This was a time when I faced my life’s most significant challenge that put me in a realm of darkness deeper than anything I had ever experienced. My son was away at college, ten hours away from me. My husband and I were experiencing struggles in our marriage due to behavioral challenges we encountered with our adopted daughter. We had also just experienced our third miscarriage since I had turned 40. And I had just had to make the decision to forgo my career to focus on my health and my daughter’s needs.
Once I regrouped and reset my goals and new purpose, I knew that this NEW DAWN was different, and the lessons this Dawn learned would propel her to keep moving forward and bring other women with her.
So that’s why I named my company Dawn of a New Day 365, because this Dawn was able to carve out a new beginning and fresh start for herself, and it was important for me a show up for myself every day – 365 days of the year.
Dawn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Again, my name is Dawn Charleston-Green. I am the founder and creator of Dawn of a New Day 365 Life Blog.
The DND365 movement focuses on women journeying through everyday life –the good, the bad, the ugly, and the unexpected: overcoming with TRUTH and TRANSPARENCY in a way that leads to TRANSFORMATION.
Through DND365, I provide content and conversations around the issues that matter to women. I strive to take the charge to meet women where they are, creating a safe space that offers inspiration, encouragement, support, and resources. The DND365 platform allows women to connect and have conversations on topics unique to the female experience.
Through articles and other creative content, I share my own personal testimonies, as well as those of others, so that women know they are not alone in their experiences or struggles. I also bring in professionals and experts in different areas so that we can learn the truths and sciences behind the information in order to make informed decisions.
I have been very pleased with the number of women who tune into my platform and engage in the topics I present for discussion. I believe that the engagement not only helps the women who participate, but it also helps me to consider things I hadn’t already thought of.
My goal with DND365 is to normalize life’s challenges related to the female experience. And I want to give a voice to those things that have been shamed or silenced so that women feel supported and empowered.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I will admit that launching into the deep of your intimate idea is intimidating. Though I already had plenty of friends on social media (I’m a veteran who has moved about, a minister, a former teacher and counselor, and a child advocate), that doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone is for you or wants to see you win. Sometimes, you second-guess yourself and whether you should be in certain spaces. Or better yet, will you be received or welcomed in those spaces? Imposter Syndrome is real!
But now I am of the mindset, “Build it, and your tribe will reveal themselves.”
First of all, I was shocked when hundreds of women joined the Dawn of a New Day 365 Facebook VIP Facebook Group. I thought I was just testing the platform when I began toying around. I soon learned that the group was LIVE, and women just continued joining and inviting other women as well.
I realized that the vision I had, to create this safe space for women, was just what others had been looking for. But what was even more shocking was that my authenticity and vulnerability were what kept them coming.
I put myself out there. The women talked to me, and I talked back. They DM’d me, and I responded.
I believe the relevant topics and conversation intrigued my followers, but it was my personal engagement that helped them commit to me, my cause, and my brand. It’s funny to me now how many people actually call me Dawn of a New Day.
You will learn that you are not for everybody. And yes, your feelings may become a little hurt at the disappointment of those who choose not to join, and even more so by those who leave you. But you must always remember that you were called for a greater purpose and that there are already specific people that have been called to you for you to serve. Serve those you’ve been called to with gladness. Don’t miss or dismiss them, wishing for those who don’t support you or believe in your cause. Or worse. They can’t receive what you’ve been called to do based on their insecurities. Remember, you’re looking for FOLLOWERS, not fans. Fans will only be with you when times are good. Followers will embrace your journey and respect you more for it.
Continue to show up every day helping your people solve their problems and being your authentic self, and you’ll soon find growth taking place in your sleep. Literally.
Also, don’t hesitate to make other connections on social media with those in similar niches. Those connections and observations are very valuable. What you can glean from each other can at times be game-changing.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
Aside from my platform, Dawn of a New Day 365, I am a self-published author. I’ve written the 5-Day Morning COFFEE Devotion and the children’s book, Heeeyy Dandelion! I have four more completed book projects that will release between the end of the year and next summer.
The most rewarding aspect of being an author is the feedback I receive on how my thoughts and words have changed people’s mindsets and impacted lives.
It’s one thing to have your own thoughts and to put them on paper, but it’s a whole other thing to have those thoughts read and dissected by others for them to interject their opinions.
At one time, I thought that I would be easily offended if someone disagreed with my personal thoughts. But my thoughts are based on my experiences, just as their feedback is based on theirs. Therefore, I welcome the dialogue. That’s what enriches us all.
