We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kafi Marsh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kafi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve always been a creative person. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t drawing or painting or writing poetry. It’s as much a part of me as the color of my eyes or the shape of my nose. It just is. Growing up, art was my favorite subject. English and math being a close second. I think I always knew that there would be nothing else, career-wise that would make me happy.
Kafi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started this business, Kushite Kulture, during the pandemic. I was looking for other ways to express myself creatively and stumbled upon resin art through one of the Facebook groups I had joined. The person was gracious enough to do a live and show us how she makes her resin dominoes, which I found interesting at the time. I was like, I can do that. So, I started with a set that showcased where I’m from, St. Croix, USVI. As I showed my work on social media, it started to get more and more attention and the orders started coming in. What sets me apart is my attention to detail. Before I even start to mix the resin, I send an email to customer with mockups of how the dominoes will look. I like to make sure we’re all on the same page and that my customers will be satisfied with their orders when they receive them. I keep communication open via email for my customers should they have any questions or concerns.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect about being an artist is seeing the impact of your creativity on others. The ability to evoke emotion, whether it is joy, sadness or anger, through your art is profound. I love the feeling of making others happy through my work. It’s what motivates me and keeps me pushing forward everyday.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is thinking that I am not enough. We often get inside our heads and stay there when it comes to taking risks and going after our dreams. I debated back and forth for awhile about whether or not it was a good idea to start selling my work as a business. With the encouragement of my husband, who has always been my biggest supporter, I took the leap.
