We were lucky to catch up with Megan Birdsong recently and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful you need to work hard, persevere, support from family and friends, and confidence.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Megan Birdsong and I’m born and raised in Hawaii. I have a beautiful family that consists of my little sweet daughter, a loving and supportive husband, and 3 fur babies. I love spending quality time with them, eating amazing food from different cultures, exploring new places, cool weather, the beach, tattoos, and so much more! I have always wanted something of my own and never really liked answering to someone else. I always wanted to be my own boss, which leads to the creation of Birdsong Event Planning.
I started Birdsong Event Planning because a good friend approached me one day and asked if I had ever thought of being an event planner. She told me that I would be perfect in a role like it and asked if I would be willing to plan and coordinate her wedding with her. Of course I said yes. I was so nervous and scared to be doing something so new and be in an industry I had no clue about. After coordinating her wedding day it gave me the confidence to keep doing it. The compliments and appreciation that was given to me by her guests and family encouraged me to keep pursuing this route. As the days and months past I was able to build a reputation for myself through my amazing clients. What sets me a part from others in my industry is that I don’t put myself in one category of planning and coordinating. I always strive to do right by my clients and provide the service unique to their needs. I’m always personable and professional with my clients. While doing that I also like to treat them like family. My services allows my clients to be less stressed and to let them enjoy their special day.
I’m proud of myself for starting my company with no experience, no confidence, and being self taught. Today I’m not the woman I was when I first started my company. I’m confident and more knowledgeable. I have become successful through each event I do and take every event as a learning experience to be better or do things differently.
Some things I want my potential clients to know about me is that I truly care about them, I’m honest, and that I will work hard to make their event a dream come true. I want them to know I play many roles on the day of their event to make their event run smoothly as possible.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Networking, respect, kindness, and referrals is key! When you meet someone in my industry you need to build a relationship with each person or vendor. Being myself is easy and its easy to get along with a person like me. I am genuine in my interactions with others in my industry. I take care of them so they will take care of me. “Treat others the way you want to be treated”.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Early on in creating my company I had a client who was very harsh and expected something I could not deliver. I was very sad and upset that I had “failed”. This experience really broke my confidence and I had considered getting out of the industry. I had days where I cried and felt I couldn’t do it anymore, but family, friends, and clients reassured me that what I’m doing I’m meant to do. I’m good at what I do and sometimes a situation like this will happen and all I can do is learn from it and keep pushing. I channeled my feelings to make myself a stronger and better version of myself today.
