We recently connected with Meko Bowden and have shared our conversation below.
Meko, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea of personal training came up through my peers. They seen that I was in the gym everyday and would mention to me how much of a transformation I was getting by going so much. At one point my peers mentioned, “you should become a trainer”. My response was, “I should, huh?”. Ever since then I had took this idea into consideration even though my first career choice was engineering. My passion for personal training sparked my interest because I love helping people and I believe that health is wealth.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a San Diego native with a great appreciation for the outdoors. As a young boy, I have always enjoyed playing outside and have spent most of my time engaging in various sports such as biking, rollerblading, and many more. Despite my size during my adolescent years, my fondness for athleticism motivated me to compete with my peers and contributed to my endurance today. Moreover, this became the catalyst I needed to confirm my newfound passion for fitness. My family has been a prominent influence. In the 5th grade, I saw my brother bench press 200lbs and I wanted to be strong, just like him. I witnessed my aunt become a professional international fitness bodybuilder, while my dad would simultaneously prompt me to complete my daily workouts. They have all played a significant role in my life by keeping me focused and committed to my goals. In the future, I aspire to become just as successful as them in my fitness journey.
When I first started college, I decided to major in mechanical engineering. However, my joy for fitness and nutrition exceeded my interest in engineering. I quickly enrolled in a weight lifting course at Grossmont Community College and started my gym membership at LA Fitness. Over time, my passion for wellness grew, and I knew at that moment that I had wanted to become a personal trainer and started my business MekoGainz. MekoGainz is about being unlimited. I started my fitness journey because I believe that health is an essential factor in life. As individuals, we tend to neglect our health because of our lack of knowledge. However, I would like to share that health is wealth within the world.
The services I offer are in-person, online and group training. Nutrition guidance is available too. The problems I fix with my clients is helping them build confidence and teaching them how important nutrition helps them reach their goals.
What sets me apart from other trainers is that I listen to my clients and I give them the program that gives them the results that they want. I am most proud of following my dreams and sharing my knowledge expertise with clients. I want potential clients to sign up and get results.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I built my business from the ground up working multiple jobs and training clients at the same time.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn was putting others before me and my business. It was distracting me from my focus and my goals.
