We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Case MicBirn Bruton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Case MicBirn , thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to help players of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds take their game to the next level– whatever that level may be. From the boys and girls who want to make the NBA/WNBA to the middle aged guy who wants to get into shape and make an impact on his men’s league team, I love to help players improve. While helping players improve, I aim to be a mentor to younger players, as a guy who has been in their shoes before. As a mentor, I want to teach not just basketball lessons, but life lessons. To the older players, I try to be a motivator and encourager. Someone to hold them accountable and push them to be better. There is so much that we cannot control in team sports. What we can control is the work we put in. The beauty and struggle in that work is what I loved as a player and what I love as a coach.
Case MicBirn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I played basketball collegiately then professionally overseas for 5 seasons. I played in Israel, Lithuania, England, and China. Whenever I would come back to the US in the off-seasons, I would train the younger players in my community. This is how MicBirn Hoops was born. I am a skills development trainer. In my playing career I was fortunate enough to have been coached by some incredible coaches with experience in the NBA and the highest levels of basketball in the world. I use these lessons and the things I learned in my career around the world to develop my training style. Any coach can put players though a bunch of drills. I do not just put players through drills, but teach intentional and purposeful fundamentals and skills. Footwork, angles, mechanics, and reads are a huge part of what I teach. I mainly work with individuals and small groups so that I can really focus my attention on each player. I cater workouts to each client. Whether that means mechanical breakdowns and very precise situations or a more up-tempo kick-your-butt workout. I also do strength, agility, quickness, and conditioning workouts with a sport-focussed intention.
Nothing makes me more proud as a coach than seeing things click with my players. It is the little wins that add up to the big wins– when a national letter of intent is signed, when a kid makes his school basketball team, or when a client feels like they’re in the best shape they’ve been in since college.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think that my reputation within my market was built on my dedication to my craft and my character. There is no substitute for doing things the right way. People recognize that and it shows how one conducts themselves and through the quality of one’s work. I take great pride in ensuring that I am detail oriented and give my players my all. My players and their parents recognize that– there’s no faking it.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I try to keep in touch with my clients and check in on their progress and life outside of basketball. Especially with younger players, it is important to relate to them outside of basketball as well if you want to serve as a meaningful mentor. Sending a text to see how a player is doing basketball-wise or not can mean a lot and help build a stronger relationship. I remember as a player how much it meant to me when I would have certain coaches check in to see how I was doing, how my game went, etc. It means a lot.
