We were lucky to catch up with Desiree Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Desiree, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.

Prior to what I do now, I used to work part-time at Home Depot as a Garden waterer from 5am-9am. At that time, I decided to move out my parents house with little to no money and no car.

In order to get to work I used to take a Lyft, but Lyft was so expensive I couldn’t afford that either so I had to think of another way that I could get to work.

I decided to buy a scooter and a helmet. I didn’t stay in the city so getting a scooter really didn’t make sense, but it was the only way to get me from point A to point B without having to worry about insurance.

So for 6 months I woke up at 4am, got on my scooter at 4:30am, and “scootered” to work to get to my 5am shift. Then once my shift was over, I scootered back home.

Looking back it was quite insane, and terribly dangerous. But it’s what helped me save up for the down payment on my car, that I now drive.

Desiree, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I’m a video editor before anything. I love video. I edit video content for businesses and organizations.

My company, Promo-Jones is a Video Content Boutique dedicated to promote the vision of visionaries.

Video is shaking every industry and it’s now considered a requirement in some shape or form. Social apps like TikTok and Reels are dominating and if you’re not able to keep up with trends, hire a video editor or have the skillset to learn how to edit, you can fall behind.

Video editing is very tedious, and requires patience. Being a business owner is very similar. I have to pay attention to the details, be efficient, and communicate effectively to make sure I’m delivering quality customer service to my clients needs for every project.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

A major lesson I had to learn is to reach out for the right help. Not just any help but the right help.

Being a business owner is lonely at times, but that doesn’t mean you have to do it a lone.

Getting help, or support also looks different in different seasons. I completed a Women’s Entrepreneurship certification from Cornell University the day before interviewing for this outlet. Cornell’s program was a huge help, and a great step in the right direction that is helping me realign my business for the better.

Reach out for the right help, and never stop learning.

Being truly passionate about what I do and my networking skills both go hand in hand here.

I’ve gone to several different conferences, and have met amazing people who I still work with today.

My purpose has always been clear, and purpose finds purpose friends.

The more I move in my purpose, the more I’m able to connect with the right people so that I can use my purpose to help them fulfill theirs.
