We were lucky to catch up with Derrick Collins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Derrick, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I took a risk when i left the safety of a corporate job and backing to starting my own practice. I went for it, and now i’m here.
Derrick, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I followed the footsteps of my father, who is also a therapist and community leader. I just wanted to be able to help people with more hands on then teaching or even clinical therapy. I do have my masters in social work which encompasses alot of what i do. I have been in the field of helping people for over 10 years ranging from foster care, Department of juvenile, substance abuse, hospice you name it i’ve conquered it. Hands down, my passion has to be youth services.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When you are a business owner, you have to get use to the things going wrong or un as planned as you would like. The control of certain circumstances can change. Over the years, i’ve learned to ride the ways, and adjust accordingly. That’s what experience teaches you. Know the seasons, and know the possible outcomes.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Having a passion for it. This field doesn’t make the most money, especially the money that it deserves. I am not doing it for the money, i’m doing it for the feel good moments that fill me up when i help people break through generational curses, and overcome hostile environments.
