We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adanna Holmes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Adanna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I did not know I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally until I dropped out of college mid-sophomore year. After dropping out for the next 2-3 years I was hopping from job to job, wandering aimlessly just living without any real direction or passion. In March of 2020, the worldwide lockdown took place. The lockdown amplified the feeling of stagnancy that I was already beginning to feel prior to the pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic inspired me to move from my hometown to an entirely new state. I wanted a fresh start, I believed a new state would bring forward movement within my life. After moving I was fortunate enough to not work for a year. I did a lot of journaling, healing, and soul searching. I re-enrolled in school as a Marketing major and decided I wanted to become a creative director. This is when I really started to zero in on my career. I always knew I wanted to have an unconventional job and also make money off of my creativity and passions. It took me some years to figure all of this out so I always tell people who are feeling lost or uncertain within themselves about what they want to do that it is going to be okay. Although I don’t have everything figured out yet. Im happy to be able to make progress in my career and begin to build the life I’ve always dreamed of.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Im currently enrolled in school majoring in marketing and graphic communications. After I graduate I plan on going to an art school for graduate school. I am actively working to build an portfolio for myself. I’ve been doing projects with my friends such as helping with photoshoots, social media accounts, etc…..
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
You can be your biggest enemy. I had to unlearn thinking so negatively of myself. I use to think that I wasn’t good enough or ready to do things. Once I moved out of my own way and changed my perspective I started to see better results within my career.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding feeling of creating is enjoying your work with others. I love seeing people reactions to the things I put out. It brings me a small sense of accomplishment.
