We were lucky to catch up with Dashia Drayton & Justin Stanley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dashia / Justin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
While in graduate school at USC Columbia, Dashia D. discovered her love of podcasts. From the witty gem drops from Amanda Seales’ “Small Doses”, the relationship advice of Yvette and Glen Henry of “How Married Are You?”, and the hilarity of “Righteous and Ratchet” with KevOnStage and DoBoy. Dashia shared funny yet insightful episodes with friends. Dashia was able to start a previous podcast and fell in love. The closing of one chapter, led to the beginning of IN(RE)TROSPECT Podcast with Justin Stanley (JStan). There have been many late-night living room and car conversations that were thought-provoking, insightful, and hilarious! We wanted to give you a glimpse into this dialogue and join the conversation. Justin and I wanted a way to create a platform to share our voices. After months of preparation and reframing any doubtful thoughts, Our podcast came to fruition and is continuing to grow!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Dashia D. has a background in mental health and social work. She has been serving communities and schools in SC, TN, and GA as a therapist and school social worker. Justin Stanley (JStan) has done community based work as well as a mentor and children’s book author. We are both passionate about serving others through education and advocacy. Our goal in every episode is to “look beyond the surface to find understanding” while bringing the audience laughs, knowledge, and culture.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
We are still in the process of building our audience, but the first step is CONSISTENCY! You want your audience to become accustomed to when they can expect a new episode and where they can find them. Collaborate with other creatives, this allows you both access to a new audience. Find your tribe, not everyone is going to be a fan which is fine. Create content that you can be proud of and your audience will find you.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
We simply want to create a safe space to have hard but real conversations. Our hope is that our audience is inspired to educate themselves and process these topics with those they are choosing to do life with.
