Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashley Epps. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Ashley, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project that I’ve ever created was my “Bmore Queer” Photography Zine. The Photography zine is an exploration of Baltimore’s Black Queer youth, and their experience’s growing up in the city. I made it originally as my final project for undergrad at Morgan State University. Overall the zine features local LGBTQIA+ youth and some quotes/stories that they wanted to share about how they came into their identity.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve always wanted to be an artist of some sort since I was a child. I originally wanted to be an animator for Pixar or a Mangaka, but quickly realized drawing was not my strong suit. What really got me established with Graphic Design, was taking a technology course in High School, ever since then I was hooked. In the years to follow I graduated from Morgan State University with my BFA and a concentration in graphic design, and am currently enrolled at the Maryland Institute College of Art in the Photography and Media Society Program.
Throughout my undergrad years I explored a lot of different mediums and promoted myself through my own personal business. With a lot of trial and error, I landed with Photography being my ultimate passion. I love to show off my local community of Black and Queer people, normal everyday life that we take for granted, and the stories that don’t get told.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to show your perspective of the world, whether it resonates with someone or not.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support your local artists! Repost and give credit always. Also communicate with your local art community and collaborate with each other, often times we view everything as a competition but no one succeeds alone.
