Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Niketa Stewart. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Niketa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
I grew up in a single parent household. My mom was sole provider all the time. However I was the eldest of 3 and it came with responsibilities. I believe my mom made plenty of mistakes like most parents, but always did her best. She’s taught me the importance of sacrifice, determination, and always said you only fail when you stop trying. I’m extremely grateful for that lesson because even when business isn’t going how I want it too I can’t bring myself to quit! I know thats because of her.

Niketa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well my name is Niketa I am a model and business owner. I got into the cosmetic industry due to the lack of products for people of color. Every time I had modeling gigs I remember makeup artist mixing several foundations to get the right tone. After inquiring and finding out there was a lack or products for my kind of skin ( uneven tone) I wanted to create something for all skin types and complexions! That’s when I started my line. I currently sell lashes, lip scrubs, lipsticks, lip gloss, and eye shadow pallette. I am working on the skin care products which will be available next year for men and women as well as foundations for all tones and types of skin. What sets my brand apart from the many others is my customer service and willingness to hear my customers out about issues they have and and feedback on products to improve them. I’m most proud of the fact I am able to keep this business going. I suffer from epilepsy and sometimes being sick causes issues, but I never give up. I try to give back every year to assist other who also suffer with epilepsy or other disabilities to show them its possible to achieve your dreams despite your health. Sometimes it takes a little longer than other but keep going…..
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is the work smarter not harder work ethic. It worked in college, but not with owning a business. When I originally started my business it wasn’t even called Succulent Cosmetics by Niketa. It was under a totally different name had a different logo and everything. I had gotten majority of my information on how to start from other business owners around me( which is ok), but didn’t put in the time to do the extra and very necessary research for everything else. Due to that my very first line was a Flop! I was so disappointed…. but I didn’t let that stop me. I just learned that I had to put in the work for myself and learn about everything about what goes into having a actual line. What I will say lesson learned and since we have moved forward. I’ve been really blessed.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective way to gain clients for me has honestly been word of mouth. I never thought that would be the best way of gaining new clients or supporters, but it’s done wonders. I appreciate everyone who shares my products online and with friends and family as well.
