We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josh Fernandez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Josh, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
The true and simplest way to learn is to enjoy the process more than the outcome. There are a few things that could’ve made things more efficient – but that’s unimportant now. Each lesson defines us today. While learning to operate a camera comes first – building relationships is paramount. Everything is uniquely interdependent and unending.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a family person before anything else. I’m a dad and husband to incredible people I will never deserve. I live a life not mine but entirely theirs. My wife and I have worked very hard to develop our kids to be bigger people than we ever will be and it’s the most spectacular thing to see.
My associates and I bring the same ethos when we create with clients. Our work is about people and not about the cool ways to take a picture. We’re firm believers that everyone is awesome and our job is to simply capture that for everyone to see. All we ask is that you be present in what’s in front of you and we’ll take care of the rest.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our mission is to provide inspired, simple imagery – spontaneous and true. The goal is to remind people how they felt when the image was created. If it’s a branding portrait session, it’s about how excited you were to start something new and reach new heights. If you’re looking at your family photo, everyone should be reminded how liberating it felt to be yourselves when you were together. Our photos celebrate you as an individual and as a part of a community. The photos we create may initially seem for us but as the years go by, most will realize it’s actually for those who will come long after we’ve left.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’m the last person to ask about building social media followers. If you have any tips, please send them my way, I’m in dire need. What I can talk about is how to turn clients into friends. It’s simpler than most would think. Firstly, you have to be good at what you do. Second, you don’t need to have the right answers, but you do have to guide them to find it themselves.
