We recently connected with Jamila Teasley and have shared our conversation below.
Jamila, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
My thoughts concerning family owned businesses are that it creates legacies, generational wealth, and you are passing down a developed skill . Although, there are challenges that family businesses face it can be conquered with understanding ones weaknesses and strengths and asserting were one falls short to own a successful family business. It can only be a conflict when there is a lack of love and compassionate in which most families tend to demonstrate more forgiveness towards their family members. My personally experience from working side by side with my mother has been a challenge but the key to our success has been communication and listening to each others concerns to resolve any disagreements.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
A little bit about myself, my entrepreneurial skills began at the age of 9 years old when my great grandmother taught me how to knit and crochet. Thereafter, I started selling knitted scarves at craft shows, owning gumball machines, and paper routes as I evolved into adulthood. Being homeschooled majority of my childhood allowed me the flexibility to learn these skills.
My interest in the beauty industry began at the age of 21, working as a healthcare worker while attending nursing school. I have always been passionate about helping others feel their best and bringing a smile to their face. One day, my sister-in-law informed me her instructor was willing to teach me how to apply mink eyelashes. So, I traveled to Georgia Career Institute where my certificate was received. Eager to practice, as I returned back to Cincinnati, Ohio I immediately scheduled my first client.
While continuing to work as a healthcare worker I managed to take on eyelashes part-time until one night an incident occurred at my job. After assisting a patient into the bed causing me to go into pre-term labor at 27 weeks and 5 days. I rushed to the hospital just in time for the doctor to prolong my pregnancy.
Unfortunately, the stay in the hospital resulted in the termination of my job. Going through the trauma of almost losing my unborn child and the termination of my job gave me more courage and motivation to take a leap of faith. It was then, when I realized that giving up was not an option to survive. My faith in God kept me strong as well as the encouragement and support from my family. After the scare, I worked in my home for the first few months. It wasn’t but shortly after that, I found a suite on craigslist in which I still occupy today. And a few months after moving into my suite, I attended Moler Beauty School to obtain my esthetician licenses. I graduated November 19th, 2018 and continued education in other related areas. My faith in God, my motivation, and determination have given me the ability to continue succeeding.

How’d you meet your business partner?
The way I met my business partner was not very difficult process because she happens to be my mother. Sheila Teasley has always been business minded and has raised her children to be entrepreneurs as well. I grew up learning all that she had to share and she poured into us as children which I developed and expanded through my own ideas as an adult. Without Sheila Teasley I am not sure where I would be and who I would be as a person. Surely I am blessed and beyond grateful for such a mother and business partner.

Have you ever had to pivot?
In 2020, during the worse part of Covid is when I had to pivot in my career and business. Towards the latter end when the service industry started to slow down I had to think strategically to ensure business continued to flow. So I brainstormed and researched vendors for quality products to retail, bringing in a new service which is the beard maintenance that would also bring in more revenue and a new clientele. By the grace of God this is how my business continues to flourish.
