We were lucky to catch up with Parker Loudermilk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Parker, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of our company comes from the country motto of Belgium “L’Union Fait la Force” which translates to “Strength in Unity.” We are primarily Belgian inspired with our beer, so we knew we wanted to have somehing in our name as an ode to this. But also we wanted our brand to represent a fusion of two worlds: Oldworld, farmhouse style beer in a modern and urban setting. And also create a space that is welcoming and inclusive in an industry that can sometime be very homogenous and gate-kept. So the idea of strength in unity was a perfect fit for our brand, while also paying homage to our Belgian inspiration.
Parker, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are predominantly inspired by Belgian-style beers (Trappist and Saison/farmhouse). Both Parker and Zach have taken trips to Belgium and were inspired by their beer culture. We also love to brew other classic European styles, as well as a few American styles (read IPAs).
*Our aim is to create a space and experience that is inclusive and appeals to all drinkers on the craft beer spectrum.
*We also strive to operate our business in a way that enhances the community and works alongside our neighborhood.
*We value representation, equality, fairness, and justice. The craft beer industry has long lacked diversity, and we are committed to playing our part in changing that.
*Victorian themed taproom with pops of modernity and quirkiness
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
We worked at Nissan as engineers for about 9 years each.
We met when we were assigned to the same team and quickly discovered our shared passion for beer and brewing. Zach had home brewed for about 10 years and Parker had homebrewed for a couple. Both are big fans of traditional Belgian and European style beers and thought Nashville was lacking options in this category.
We decided to quit our jobs at Nissan in order to pursue the dream of opening a brewery.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
We looked for a location for over a year before finding a suitable location. Once it was found, there were tons of construction delays and hiccups. Added on top of this, the Covid pandemic began 6 months into starting construction causing further delays and challenges. Construction of the space took nearly 2.5 years after signing the lease to complete.
