We were lucky to catch up with Mossiah Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mossiah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I was at a point in life where I had done and seen a lot but was still feeling like I had no purpose. I later attended a church service and during this service the pastor asked a small congregation, “What is it that you want from God?”, some answers were, “more money”, “better health”, “new job”, etc. When he came to me, I looked up at him and said, “I want to know my purpose”. Soon after that I was offered an opportunity to take over the lease on a studio that was previously ran by some local drug dealers and had a pretty bad reputation with law enforcement and neighboring businesses. Well God answered my prayers and I now had a purpose but I also had inherited a problem. Most businesses start from scratch well I had to start with being known as the “ratchet studio where people got shot at”. Nevertheless I believed this place could be impactful to the community and I decided to clean up our image and establish that V12 was not “those other guys!” Initially I was underfunded so I had to give up my car and home in order to maintain the business, yes I was homeless and slept in the studio but I knew if I focused and worked hard it will all pay off someday. It’s been seven glorious years in business to date and we have become a staple in music and entertainment in our region and our brand is recognized across the globe. We have expanded into music, film and clothing along with being the #1 studio in the state of SC! To God Be The Glory! V12 Studios where there are no limits!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When starting out this business I quickly learned that finding credible engineers was going to be my biggest obstacle. I tried out numerous candidates but the majority don’t have the proper knowledge or skill set to give us an advantage. One day I was referred to a potential candidate, we scheduled a meeting and everything was good except the fact that this candidate was only 18 years old, a bit young to be the face of my new business but being desperate I went with him. Soon we began to make a name for ourselves and after 2 years of hard work we had established a name in the business. Unfortunately others got to him and convinced him that he was the reason for V12’s success and that he could build his own studio and compete with us. He believed this to be true and he left our company and went on to open his own studio using not only my blueprint but also took my customer database and solicited all my previous clients to now support his new venture. I can truly say this was heartbreaking and a game changer for me, all sorts of weird thoughts entered my head but the biggest voice I heard said this, “Don’t get bitter, Get better!” Those 5 words made me the man and the brand I am today, that motivation to show this guy that this was God’s Plan not mine and He did not bring me here to fail. So I searched rigorously for a replacement and also enrolled in online classes to learn graphic design and photography it proved to be the best decision of my life. I found a replacement and started offering design and video services and the business took off again and went on to become the powerhouse it is today.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
When I started this business I wanted to make the studio experience totally different from what I was used to, when I was actively pushing music artist, the studio was the worst part of it for me. The process was always cold and felt rushed, I always left feeling unsatisfied for some reason. Once I had a chance to create an environment for creatives I thought about making it more inviting and welcoming. I wanted my clients to feel relaxed and safe, I wanted the facility to be clean and smelled fresh at all times. My attention to the smaller things is what made us different, we did everything the competition didn’t do and we made our clients feel special. This made our clients our “marketing team” They told many others about their experience and it spread quickly
