We recently connected with Musa Ellison and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Musa, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Like many others, I chose to use my time during the pandemic to really take a step back and assess my options of supplementary income. I’ve already followed plenty of content creators on YouTube as well as Instagram, so I decided to try my hand at it. I have a lot of interests, so giving myself a platform and outlet to express myself was a no-brainer.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Professionally, I work in Supply Chain Management. My interests in understanding how things work as well as the ins and outs of business models propels me in everything I do. My main hobbies include gaming, sneaker collecting, and watching anime. My wife got me a laptop for my birthday in 2020, and the day before one of our staycations, I just decided to grab a camera.
I started vlogging as well as doing sneaker reviews and unboxings. I felt that I had a lot to bring to the content space because I have a rare combination of interests that most people don’t have. I also feel like my perspective on a lot of topics that I discuss on my channel are unique.
After starting my YouTube, I tried to figure out other ways that I could utilize my newfound videography/editing skills. I created two online courses for sneaker reselling as well as starting a vending machine business. I also started freelance modeling for clothing brands while utilizing my rare sneaker collection. Most recently, I have an entrepreneurial podcast as well as a second YouTube channel that I react to current events.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’d say there’s one main goal, and there are a few side missions that will help that come true. My overarching goal is financial freedom and setting up my family to be comfortable. Like the majority of the population, my wife and I find ourselves on the hamster wheel of corporate America. It’s rare to find a career you really love and are passionate about, and it’s even rarer to not feel like you’re killing yourself to power someone else’s dream.
It’s also hard to make enough money to live the lifestyle that you desire by becoming an entrepreneur. My goal is to create as many streams of income by combining the lessons that I’ve learned professionally with my hobbies and interests. This will allow me to work on my own time, while freeing up my wife to do whatever her heart desires.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I believe the most rewarding aspect is enjoying the fruits of your labor. Getting things handed to you never feels as good as really digging into a risky or difficult task, and finally figuring it out and being able to benefit from said outcome. You really appreciate it more when you “get it out the mud” as they say. Only you, and those close to you, really understand the amount of hours, loss of sleep, frustration, and resources that you spent in order to have a vision come to fruition.
