We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Onel Bascom. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Onel below.
Alright, Onel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
I ditched the traditional business I had last year. I earned my first check as a creative/content creator and it was a new day. It felt right! It reassured me that I made the right choice. Earning money for doing what you love makes it feel non-transactional. It happened after I helped a client develop a themed promo video. We decided to recreate mean girls. It changed my view of myself. I am visually creative. I love watching projects come to life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is O’nel and I am the CEO of onelforsure LLC. A creative/entertainment company. I focus on visual projects, content creation, and entertainment. I got into this industry after realizing I love working on creative projects. I had more fun on content days than I did at meetings discussing business funding or credit. It became a job and something to check off of my list. Social media can feel like a job if you are not into content and visuals. The problems I solve include bringing out my client’s natural creativity. Setting them apart from others in their niche. What sets me apart is my love for a project coming together. Big or small Onel going to get it done! What I am proud of the most are my growth and tenacity. I am dominating a field I was once scared to enter.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I may tear up answering this however, this part of my life demonstrates resilience to the fullest. January was a different month for me. I was buying my first house, working with clients, and finishing a personal project. The day I got the call for my official closing date, I found out my mom passed while on vacation in her home country. Everything in me wanted to quit and drop my clients. I thought of the woman that worked hard to raise me after immigrating to the U.S. Would she want me to quit? Instead, I went to therapy and I focused on my business. I broke all the records in my business that I set. Resilience is the ability to bounce back but somehow I evolved.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Watching a project come together is the most rewarding aspect of being a creative. Most people only see minutes of a visual or project. They are not aware that it took months of preparation from time to money to lots of creative energy. Hearing a client say this everything I imagined just reassures me how hard we work as creatives. I always encourage my clients to be proud of their work and if you are not proud, do it again!!
