We were lucky to catch up with Christy Campbell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christy , appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
After finishing art school I decided the best choice for me was to enter the corporate world, it was consistent money and I felt like that’s what I needed in order to grow. Several years later, I realized that job was completely unfulfilling for me. I started working part time in photography while doing other creative endeavors like co-owning a DIY craft store with my Mom. Shortly before the pandemic that business venture came to an end and it was time to move on. After years of self doubt of whether or not I could be a full time photographer, I took the plunge anyways. In late 2019 my photography career was gaining momentum and I felt the most fulfilled and excited about my career for the first time ever. Owning your own business comes with many ups and downs but for me its given me a chance to express who I am and have that work-life balance I always dreamed of. If I could go back to straight out of college me, I’d tell her to take all the risks because the rewards are so much greater.

Christy , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a photographer based out of San Antonio, Texas who specializes in fashion, branding, and couples portraits. I center my business around celebrating people’s differences and highlighting what makes them unique. From the beginning I knew it was important for me to empower women through photography. I work with many small women owned businesses and women wanting to rejoice their bodies, each session is different and tailored to your specific needs. One of my proudest moments so far was photographing for the June 2021 Pride Month edition of the San Antonio Magazine. Capturing the LGBTQ+ community is intrinsic to my business and being an ally to all people through photography.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I believe creating a great experience for my clients has been the most effective for the growth of my business. Each person or business I encounter is different and it’s important to me as a photographer to base my sessions around that. Social media is a great tool to set yourself apart from others in your field and show consistency in your work but through my experience I have learned that word of mouth is the best way to attract the clientele you want.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a photographer is seeing the excitement my clients have when viewing their photos. A lot of clients start the session nervous and unsure how to pose but with some guidance and a little bit of warm up time, we get to a place where the magic happens. Ending a session with words from clients like “you made me feel so comfortable” or “I usually hate taking photos of myself but these are stunning” are what makes this job so fulfilling.
