We were lucky to catch up with Becca Reuben recently and have shared our conversation below.
Becca, appreciate you joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I would never want anyone to think I was trying to be an “influencer.” Not that there is anything wrong with those who are. I view what I do more as a diary of what I’ve worn and what I think other people may also like to wear. I have never made any money off of my Instagram or TikTok. This is purely a hobby for me. It is an outlet I have used since 2017 to be creative and share what I love! I do not take myself seriously, it is purely for fun!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve always loved fashion and style and wanted to share it with people who were interested. I would have women stop me in public and ask where I got my dress from or shoes. My husband kept telling me to get a business card! I thought to myself I might as well share those things in one spot! I started a blog in 2017, and just wrote about clothing I found that I thought others may be interested in as well! Most of the clothing I wear is not super expensive and very accessible to everyone. I had been a stay at home mom at that point for several years, and needed some sort of creative outlet to be happy. The blog is no longer, but I have so much fun on TikTok and Instagram sharing what I’ve worn. I consider what I do more of a diary of what I’ve found. My absolute favorite type of creative work to do is Halloween costume ideas. If my page could just be full of Halloween costume ideas, that would be just fine with me!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is when someone sees something I’ve shared and wants to know how they can also own it! I love helping other women find affordable, fun clothing. My favorite is when they want to know where I’ve found a gown that I’ve shared. I know they are going to purchase it for a special occasion. It just makes me happy!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I think the importance in having “followers,” is just so trivial. I didn’t do what I do to get followers. I just did it because I truly enjoy my hobby. When its purely a hobby and an outlet I don’t think the number of people who follow you really matter. If people like you, they will stick around. If they don’t then that is okay, too!
