We recently connected with Tanner Cartrite and have shared our conversation below.
Tanner, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew from a young age I wanted to be two things in life, a nurse and a hairstylist. Well I got my CNA in highschool and worked with that for 9 years, but my time had come with that and my path was ready to change. And hairschool here I come. I remember from a young age watching my mom and grandma get ready with hair and makeup. I didn’t follow the makeup path but hair I did. And then as I grew up I was always doing my best friends hair! As well as Barbie’s and well honestly anything with hair!! Okay he first week of hairschool I knew I had finally found my calling. Was it easy no, but did we survive yes!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well I’m Tanner Cartrite, owner/operator/ stylist of Running with Scissors. I’m located in downtown Fort Worth inside of Collective Salon. I got into the industry because Im wild, loud, extremely creative and well that just doesnt always go over to well in the nursing industry. Haha! I work with alot of different brands but mainly stick to Oligo pro! It’s just alroumd beautiful! I’ve never really had a hard time being set apart from our her people. It just happens. I’m contagious(in a good way haha). Sitting in my chair will never be the same, and there will never a dull moment. I will have you laughing the whole appointment. Terrible dads jokes? I got ‘em! Haha I tell it like it is even if stings just a little bit! Do I specialize in a few thing yes! Do I do all things absolutely! Red heads are my favorite! Red heads are stunning to me and red heads are always a challenging color and I’m always up for a good challenge! I also do extensions work and unique hairstyles for my men, women and gender neutral people! Vivid fantasy hair color I’m your person! Did I mention how much I LOVE red heads? Haha
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding part about being a hairstylist is seeing the smile and the face of a client when they see their hair done and able to run their hair through it and swish it back and forth! There’s no better reward than that!!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
So I have ran my business for 6 of the 8 years I’ve been a stylist. I worked for a corporate salon and got fired 2 days before Christmas. Not only did that put me in a jam right before Christmas but also for the coming days after. And that is how Running with Scissors came about! I open my business on a total last min whim. And 6 years later we’re going strong!!
