Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christia Cummings-Slack. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I have formal training in fine art from undergraduate school. That gave me a very strong foundation in the fundamentals of fine art in many medium. I had the best opportunity to study photography, drawing, painting, print making, ceramics, jewelry making, and sculpture in undergrad. Well I truly believe practice makes the master. So you must practice your craft every day, whatever it is you choose to do. I would say one of my most essential skills is learning to let it go, let the flow of the creative process take you where the piece wants to go. I think sometimes we get stuck in projecting a final outcome. And when the process is not leading us to where we though we would end up being ok with where we actually are.
Christia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well, my grandmother says I could draw and play cards before I could walk. Which I just find hysterical as a description of me to a T. I love cards still to this day and I always am making marks, doodling, creating something on paper or canvas. I found my love of watercolor the first day I picked up a brush, it literally sang across the paper. I was hooked instantly. In undergraduate school I had the privilege of studying painting in Italy for a month in the Umbria region. It was truly life changing. I discovered putting nature: rocks, sticks, leaves, etc. in my watercolors and how this left an impression. Then after it dries going back to the paper and see what it is telling me it wants to be. Sometimes I would see faces or scenes. It is the magic of the process of watercolor and how you don’t truly know until it is dry. When I came to Savannah to do my masters in painting I discovered my intuitive abilities. So I combine my psychic ability with my art. I create Soul Paintings and Angel Paintings for clients. When I do my spiritual coaching I create art to help the individual manifest or stay on track with positive visual reminder art. I love that I can combine all I do to help someone improve their life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Currently I have been working on cloud paintings to bring peace into peoples homes. It just feels like the world needs peace right now.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Spend you dollars locally on local art. Simple as that. When you have a real art piece in your home you have that energy from that art and artist. It is so different that just a print or poster. I challenge you to start collecting a real collection of art!
