We recently connected with Dr. Canary and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Canary, thanks for joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
A career in the pharmaceutical industry requires you to be adaptable to an ever-changing medical environment. The lessons I’ve learned over the years that’s assisted me in being an entrepreneur. Lesson #1: Always strive to avoid stagnation. A valuable life lesson you can learn from work is that those who always strive to learn more and continue to progress through times of stagnation are those who succeed. You should always be learning and bettering yourself as a person. Just because you’ve succeeded doesn’t mean you should stop trying to improve as a person. Furthermore, being in a challenging situation doesn’t mean you should be resigned to your fate. Lesson #2: Make connecting with others a priority: Think about your personal life—would it be where it is today without the connections and relationships you’ve built with the people you love the most? Each person in your network is a valuable member of your team and adds invaluable quality to your life.nAsk questions, listen to people’s opinions and stories. Making connections with others a priority is an important lesson that can improve every aspect of your life both in and out of work.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Dr.Canary obtained her undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor in neuroscience and theatre from Wesleyan College. MA from Walden University specializing in children/adolescent counseling and sex education. I hold a medical degree from Washington University of Health and Science. Certified as a Sex Therapist by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) through Modern Sex therapy Institute. As a doctor and sex therapist, I have expertise and experience working with a wide range of sexual and relationship issues. I specialize in working with individuals with mental illness, sex education, discordant desire and infidelity in couples, sexual dysfunction and anxiety, and sexual compulsivity.
How I got into medicine
Honestly, I never expected to become a physician, I’ve always enjoyed learning but I hated school since kindergarden. I was encouraged to apply for medical school by one of my professors in my second year of my Master’s degree. During my time working as a psychiatric tech in an inpatient facility, I constantly heard the kids mention they had never seen a black psychiatrist. So I thought, why not apply?
Philosophy
I believe that one’s sexuality is at the core of our human identity. A happy sex life transcends to your personal, your professional, and your social life and mirrors itself in your level of happiness, self-confidence and success. Difficulties in sexual functioning and expression often go right to the core of an individual’s relationship to him or herself. Being able to experience pleasure, creativity and fulfillment through sexual expression lies at the heart of our human existence
what problems you solve for your clients
I see counseling as a collaborative relationship that moves individuals along the path to empowerment and self awareness. I am deeply committed to helping clients focus on their goals and build on existing strengths to cope with challenges in a safe, open, and non judgmental environment. I focus on a holistic approach to treatment emphasizing the importance of the mind-body relationship and the overall effects that thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and our environment have on our life experiences. My work supports individuals in developing a deeper understanding and connection with themselves, stronger more fulfilling relationships with others, and overall life balance and satisfaction strengthened by positive mental and emotional health.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The expansion of my brand recently has made me realize the importance of building and gaining knowledge of business, finance, and entrepreneurship. During medical school, I did not learn about the business side of starting a business.
My journey has been aided by the following books
1. Atomic Habits: James Clear
2. We should all be millionaires by Rachel Rogers
3. Think and grow rich: Napoleon Hill
4. The laws of human nature: Robert Greene
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
1. Remember to look on the bright side: Every day isn’t going to be the best day and some days can be downright challenging. However, if you can remember to look on the bright side, the difficult days can be just another way to grow in both your career and life in general. Being able to remain positive and look at things with optimism is an invaluable life lesson. The more you can improve your outlook and the less the small things affect you, the better you’ll be able to handle challenges in both your professional and personal life. As a result, you’ll find yourself happier and more content no matter the situation.
2. Focus on developing and using your strengths: Finding out what you enjoy doing and what you’re truly good at and passionate about. Find what you enjoy doing the most and work to develop your strength in that area. Keep in mind that no one is an overnight expert and that you’ll have to work hard to get to where you want to be. While anyone can be good at something with enough hard work, those who find pride and enjoyment in their work will succeed more than those who don’t. Realizing where your strengths and passions lie enables you to set concrete goals in your professional life and gives you an actionable plan to achieve them. Focus on whatever it is that makes you feel like you’re doing the best work you can and develop those skills to create the best world for yourself. Endurance, motivation and commitment!
