We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Doris Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Doris, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job
The most important lesson, experience Ive had in a job that has helped me as a business owner is the act of kindness . I think a lot of times we get into business, forget that we were once consumers and lack professionalism . Ive learned that even through a bad day my job is to ensure that you look and feel beautiful. In the past I’ve worked for many retailers (Ulta & Sephora) these customers shopping at those retailers have a certain level of knowledge about skin care and makeup and its up to us to make them walk out feeling confident to go home and achieve whatever desired skill they are trying to perfect. I’ve learned patience and learned the correct verbiage in professionally speaking, so with that knowledge I’ve applied it to my business and I’m able to excel in any environment I’m servicing my clients .

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Doris Thomas and I am a professional makeup artist. Ive been in business 9 years and this alone celebrate as being one of the few in the beauty industry(Atlanta area) that continued to serve clients even through the pandemic. I dove.into the industry as a self taught entrepreneur whom built the foundation of my business through sacrifices, dedication and consistency. I specialize in bringing elegance to your true beauty. I also pride myself in building confidence through my confidence. What sets me apart from other muas, is my flexibility, my mobility and my consistent personality skills. To be in this industry you have to believe in everything that you are providing and that’s not just the service, but the experience. I am here to give my clients the experience of a lifetime and to have a moment that will turn into a memory for a life time. Through different varieties of services I have networked with many that have put me in position to gain knowledgeable experience with weddings, photo shoots, product features, fashion shows and so much more. My brand is founded off of self love and I wanted my business to be a representation of such.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The story behind all social media platform is to stay true to yourself. The viewers can tell when you aren’t being true to yourself. I’ve used my personality to grow my audience. I’ve hosted giveaways, different engagements within the community to keep my audience engaged with my social media content. I’m always finding new ways to promote and use content to not only keep my current clients engaged but to offer services to those that are looking to learn how to also be where I am. My advice to anyone just starting to build a social media platform, is to always remember your why. Your why will keep your motivated and with that comes with being consistent. Being your biggest fan when no one else is supporting is something to remember as well.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
One of my most effective ways that I keep in touch with my clients is by sending them courtesy texts. to ensure that their beauty needs is covered for the rest of the month. I am currently working on a brand loyalty program, where my clients can benefit from future promotions and discounts off my product and services.
