We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashliegh Lisset a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ashliegh , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I should start off by saying, that I’ve been singing ever since I could talk, or so my parents say! However, I didn’t know that I would pursue music until much later in my life. It wasn’t until I was 11 years old and my father, who was a sergeant in the United States Army was killed in action. This is a very sad, but pivotal moment for me and what I would decide to do for the rest of my life. Music became my coping mechanism, and by the time I turned 12 I was performing every single weekend. From festivals, to the Texas Opry circuit, pretty much anywhere that would book me. After a few years of performing, a vocal coach that I was working with invited me out to Nashville to record in a real studio for the very first time. I was 15, and I remember that day very well, because it was the day that I decided that music was going to be the rest of my life. From the moment I stepped into the vocal booth it felt like home.

Ashliegh , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I decided to do music, I didn’t really know what genre I would put myself in. Then one day it all just organically happened, and country music is where I found my home in the music industry. Has a Latina, growing up family gatherings were filled with lots of music, my uncles would play the guitar, and my aunts would sing. From Johnny Cash, all the way to Freddie Fender. I always say that I think I was meant to be with country music, because it has always been deeply rooted in who I am. I’m most proud of the fact that when I’m performing, and meeting people, that I’m spreading the The message of healing after tragedy. When something tragic happens in your life, it’s easy to let it take over you, but I decided that spreading a message of hope through singing/performing was what I wanted to do.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding apart about what I do, is getting to meet people whether it’s after shows, or through social media. When they tell me that they’ve read about my story, and that I’ve inspired them to chase after their dreams and goals. That’s what makes it all worth it. If I can change just one person‘s perspective on chasing their dreams then I feel like I’ve done what I set out to do, which is to inspire others and promote healing after tragedy.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I first started building my social media following, I would make sure to constantly interact with those who were commenting on my posts or even simply liking my posts, etc. It’s definitely different with each website, and it requires putting in a lot of work, especially when you’re just getting started. For me, I feel like being more organic with my social media help me grow my following. So I don’t just post things that are music related, but I post travel content, and fashion which are all things that I love. I think that the biggest thing is definitely interacting with those who are interacting with you! I think what most people want from social media is someone that they can relate to, and so I always keep that in mind when I am posting.
