We recently connected with Brandon Marshall and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was 13, my creative minds eye burst to life! As an adolescent, I grew up really badly, as well as constantly being in a new home or school. I never really kept the same friends for long and eventually grew apart from the ones I did. We were on a roof, in Culver City CA, myself, my good friend Jr at the time and his older brother Jerry. Well, Jerry was into Rap, and I didn’t personally realize the artistic side (or for me, my outlet in life) of it at the point. So suddenly Jerry and his friends were free styling, and as they’re rhyming and putting words together, it hit me for the first time that you could SAY ANYTHING… It was the most powerful moment for me in my entire life. It gave me the freedom to talk about my mom, my dad, any abuse or ANYTHING that kind of upset me. As a kid, I was really angry. I was really misunderstood. And at that point I also realized I thought much different than most other people. Once I started to create, it was very apparent to me that I was able to create trends or can even call it simply being unique. Fast forward to turning 32, I got into photography. Photography has truly uplifted me and allowed me to set a new spark into the world.. I always try to add a reason and purpose behind my work. I always want to tell a story. I never want it to be misunderstood. Than it just became so consistent, I’ve worked with so many other artist’s, it only made sense to do it at a professional level.
Brandon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So I day dream OFTEN! In 2018, once I purchased my first camera (Nikon), I started thinking of wanting to work with top runway models, actresses and people who are at the top of their fields. I started thinking, HOW would I get there?!?! ART of course… Art By Photography! That is how the brand of my company came to life. My companies motto is Keep turning heads and Inspiring! Because I remind myself of my own struggles and to Inspire others who need to be uplifted and reminded of their OWN GREATNESS! It reminds me to never do anything LESS than Inspirational work; in one form or another. I’m most proud of the fact I was able to create my own magazine (Famous By Photography). That to me was for sure a proud moment. It is a super incredible feeling to have accomplished models in the fashion that I have thus far. It’s been extremely humbling and through my own ups and downs gratifying. There has been no greater feeling to me, than to watch my goals and imagination come to life. I’ve been truly blessed with the talent that I have worked with this far (everyone is tagged on my IG). So, my professional focus is directed more towards magazines and printed portraits. I enjoy sharing my work in galleries or events and venues. I one day hope to become a well know photographer and make a living as an artist selling his work that way. I do try and host free events for family and children a few times a year as well. My goal is not to be rich in this trade but to be able to down the road share my work with a larger population and audience. For the clients and models I do work with, I definitely specialize in fashion and creative photography. I’m much more aimed at street photography in terms of preference and enjoy shooting most. I do work and create images specific to models portfolios needs and desires. I enjoy working with many people, My consequence and outcome is always to remain unique.
My professional portfolio, magazines, and ability to purchase and support my collections, can be found on my website!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For sure, it’s having the ability to create for others. Their appreciation, reactions, love for ones work is a wonderful feeling. As an artist, we really get to understand it’s unique for one to be able to even create something. They say you can’t create something unless you’ve seen it first. But art is really creating something for others to see for the first time, I feel. It’s not something everyone can do, and when you can do that; I think it’s a must. For those I believe it’s also where our peace resides… Most artist or creatives I know have had bad or traumatic experiences and is an outlet for that in MANY WAYS. So for most of us, it’s definitely a type of peace or underlying point of inner fulfilment..
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
For sure. My purpose is to show constant growth and resilience. It’s to show people with disorders and traumatic moments can still be useful and even an inspirational and motivational member to society. It’s to never forget where I’ve come from and what I’ve come from. It’s to lift up others who came from my same shoes. Every project I do, I defy the odds and statistics. I touch another soul, mind and leave behind something created by my imagination and story. My goal is driving me to look at the world differently and always to hold my unique perspective, to make the world think differently in that moment when viewing my work!
