We were lucky to catch up with Sharla Edmondson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sharla, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The risk I took was opening my spa during the pandemic. I knew that with Covid-19 still having an affect on people I still chose to take the big jump and start business on my own. It was definitely scary, but I took all the proper precautions to make sure my clients had a safe environment to come and get the wellness services that they needed. Since the pandemic was stressful I felt an urge to get out there so I can help people relax, destress, and take care of their needs. Genesis beauty company has been thriving since opening day June 1, 2021.
Sharla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an Esthetician of 10 years. I went to school at the Aveda Institute Austin to study Esthiolgy. I got into my industry because I was looking for a career change and working years in insurance. I wanted to find a field where I could help people and become an esthetician fit with everything I wanted to learn and do for people. I have a holistic spa where I only use products and treatments that won’t harm the skin and body. As a holistic esthetician I feel that you don’t need to create trauma to the skin in order to get the results you want. Achieving skin goals can all be done with an inside out approach. Some of the services I provide are facials, guasha, waxing, dermaplaning, lash lifts, and tinting. I have created a few facial with different modalities to achieve curtain skin care goals. The men’s facial is even a popular services because it has bead care included in the facial. I find joy in helping clients solve their skin concerns. I have helped clients with acne, muscle tension and jaw pain (by using Guasha treatment), and even getting started on a new skin care journey. I truly take the time to talk to clients about what they want from my services and we come up with a plan from skincare to diet so we can solve their concerns from the inside and out. I am most proud of the difference I have made with my clients. To help them on so many levels is why I do what I do. Its about how you feel on the inside when you leave an appointment with me and also how your skin looks and feels. The confidence that people have after the feel and look good is so amazing. I always want to be able to help everyone who feels like they are at a dead end and have tried everything. I guarantee you there is something that can always be done differently to get the results you want.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I worked 5 years in the insurance field. It was a stressful environment, but I didn’t see how I could leave the corporate world and be able to make it anywhere else. Once I was pregnant with my first child I knew that if I wanted to make a career change that the time would have to be soon. I didn’t want to bring home work stress to my newborn baby. While on maternity leave I decided that I wasn’t going back. Being a new mom I realize how much m baby needed me and even though leaving corporate world was scary I had to make the jump for my family and give myself a chance to thrive and be happy. I stayed home until my son was 3, the time flew by but it was exactly what I needed to make a plan into what new career I wanted to build for myself. I was thinking about the 1st facial I had gotten when I was pregnant and then it hit me! Maybe I can help people relax and destress the way the esthetician helped me. Also, during and after pregnancy I had acne and acne scarring. This brought me to research ing skin and then finding a school so I could become an esthetician. I spent years as a waxer then decided it was time to what I love caring for people who had skin concerns. That’s when I spent years in the spa learning and seeing all different skin types and concerns. once Covid came in 2020 the spa I worked at closed just like everyone else. When they reopened I couldn’t got back because it was summertime in the middle of a pandemic. I had no child care to help while I was at work. So, I stayed home with both of my kids for a year we homeschooled and I started on a new plan on how to open my own spa. That year I learned everything I could so I would be ready in the next year to move forward. When the kids started school I started my own business. Even though the process was long I learned so many valuable lessons and Im so happy I made the first initial jump because it lead me to leaps and bounds of new opportunities in the future.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Being consistent with my work and helping people get the results they want. I find that because I’m a solo esthetician many people love that they get to be treated by me every time. I try to go above and beyond to help my clients and they always are very satisfied with each service and all the thought process that goes into everything at the spa.
