We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sade Wingate a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sade thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Taking A Risk? I’m A Risk taker …. LOL
I’ve learned that about myself within the last past few years I’ve been a business owner. I truly believe in having faith more than taking risk. Faith allows your wings to save you when it begins to feel like your falling . In many ways building a business is one big decision you have to make not only for yourself but your family as well. Taking on the responsibility to be able to still provide for them when you don’t know how your going to make your next dollar. I have a genius level talent so putting my ideas to work means I have to always try something new. And people will be honest with you , if it isn’t up to Their standard. Creating new dishes or even putting a work team together required me to be more on the edge . Not everyone is good working together. You need chemistry in order for the vibration levels to really reach its highest height. When the balance is off everything else will be off. So I go into work with a serious face but with a positive heart and mind.
Sade, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I AM CHEF DAE! Owner and Head Chef of Dream Street Cuisine . I wanted to be a business owner and create my own version of the cooking industry. I began working in 2017 , it started with Catering . My cousin was one of the first DSC supporters . She hired me to setup a catering style buffet for her friend Bridle Shower. And I was extremely nervous. This is when the idea I had for the catering came to life! I envisioned how I wanted it but bringing it to life was totally different. To say this was my first catering I handled it pretty well lol. I didn’t know all that came with running a business until I decided this was what I knew for sure was my do all be all final decision. In order for the business to grow , I had to commit myself to it! It was the first thing I did and the last. Talking about it became the only thing I knew about because I was learning new ways and just excited that it was really working. My discipline had to be next level in order for people to respect my craft . If it wasn’t for my business I wasn’t doing it , I didn’t allow myself to get caught up in what was going on because it will always be something going on. I wanted something new in my life and DSC was it. Dream Street Cuisine is a catering & FoodTruck business and we provide a food for all types of events weddings , baby showers , birthday parties and company holiday events. Servicing the pubic comes with its ups and downs because not everyone will like your food , regardless how you feel you don’t allow the client and their guest to see or feel what you are going through. You come ready to serve and provide your best. I am most proud of my discipline , really sticking to building and getting more involved in the process . It’s just that simple give your all today and go even harder tomorrow. I would like for people to learn more about DSC through platform just like this or just by following my journey on social media . On my story I am more open to showing who I am as a person . Now more work and creative side is displayed on the page. You will be able to see my growth over the years . Every dish is different because every client is different. Setting up each event is what brings me closer to my purpose and I can feel like becoming stronger.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When I first started out , I was broke ! I would take on catering jobs to build my experience. Teaching myself how to do things and what I wanted to present to the client . I sucked at knowing what to charge so that was the first step of running a business wrong . I didn’t want to charge to much and run the clients away so I used that time for growing . As the business grew I had to increase my prices in order to make a profit . If your not making a profit the money will not match the business and you will began to burn Yourself out. After learning what the banks require for a loan , I started preparing my business better because I knew I wanted to have a brick & mortar one day. From filing taxes , increasing prices and expending the business so we have more options for the clients it became better for everyone.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn being employee in order to be a business owner! I thought that’s all I had to do was cook and prepare food. Lol boy was I wrong . Once I became better at booking caterings and expanding to large events Reality stepped in. I began to see other businesses grow, so in my mind I decided that I needed to become more business savvy in order to push the business forward. Now I’m in a Better situation I can move myself up lol
