We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Damion Hype. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Damion below.
Hi Damion, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
April 10th of 2019 was my last day in a corporate office, in January of that year I was told, in 60 days they will no longer have a job for me, right after that, Covid happened, in May they stoled and burnt my car. One after another, L’s after L’s. I then decided, for the first time to focus fully on my music and my Jamaican night club.. 3 years later and I’m now streaming in 40 different countries on Apple Music and JamRack “wid di vybz” is one of the most popular night clubs in Memphis

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I go by Damion Hype, I have a passion for music and entertaining
I always get asked, what made you choose a “Fusion” style of music and what’s the vibes like at the club.
For me, I’m a creative writer, a Pisces at that, I enjoy all genres of music, so to be able to take something from each of them and put it together is fun and exciting and we have the same concept for the club.. you hear just about everything whenever you’re there
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
JamRack Bar&Lounge was opened in August 2018, since we didn’t have a international night life in Memphis, I figured this would immediately jump off because of the amount of foreigners in the city. For the rest of 2018 through half of 2019 we had to cover all expenses from what we made at our regular job. What was most shocking was the audience that I was targeting wasn’t coming.
Sitting in the club one Friday night, with literally no customer, I asked one of my friends to record me, I was going to create a promo video, I edited the video and post it that following day and to my surprise it went viral 94K views, titled “First Jamaican Club in Memphis”
We now operate one of the most diverse experience in the city, I guess we’re not only fusing music we’re also fusing cultures

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
The music part of my career started late compared to most, coming from a 3rd world country, I felt it’s my duty to make sure my family back in Jamaica was always taken care of. I took a job 2 weeks after I moved to America, I would still write but wasn’t focused on making that a primary career because what if? I have a lot of people depending on me! So here I am in later part of my life doing 10 times better than the 10 years I spent working in a corporate office.
Today we have a night club, Record label and my music on all platforms, streaming in over 40 countries, received a movie award for best supporting actor
