We recently connected with Jay Nicole and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay , thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I feel that with anything you’re passionate, and serious about continuous consistency is key. This is something that I’m working on myself. Life definitely can and does get into the way at times BUT again if whatever it is is that important continuous consistency is key.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been doing hair for years. I taught myself how to braid by watching my mom do my hair at a young age. When my family, and I moved to Texas, getting a job just wasn’t something I wanted to do, and I knew I could braid. I started doing friend’s hair to make some extra cash, and when I graduated high school I went into cosmetology school. Soon after starting school I became pregnant, and decided to drop out to work in corporate america. Long story short I hated it! So much so I’d get fired for not doing my best. My best friend suggested I’d just go back to finish cosmetology school, and I thought that was probably for the best. So I went back, finished, and opened Glo Up Studio in 2018. We specialize in extension installs of all kinds(Microlinks, Hand tied extensions, Closure Sew ins, and more) and silk presses on all types of hair. I’d like to think we’ve created a safe place for women to go for a one on one experience with a stylist, and just blatantly be themselves. I’d like my future clients to know that they’ll receive the full Glo Up treatment once stepping foot into Glo Up Studio. Our goal is to provide Top notch service to every queen that sits in our chair.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Yes it did! Hair has always been life for me, but when I found out I was having a baby I decided that getting a corporate job with a steady check and benefits was the best way to go. I started working in the insurance industry. I sold life, health, home, and auto insurance for a few of the top companies in the industry. I’d go to work from 11am-8pm Monday to Friday and on weekends and sometimes before going to work on the weekdays I’d do hair. Well after doing that for so long I started disliking my corporate job. I realized that I’d go to work, and be unhappy most of the day from dealing with the stress of managers being on me about meeting goals and unhappy customers on the phone. When I’d get off to go do my side hustle, it would be my stress relief. After being fired from a few jobs, my best friend was just like ok Jay , go finish cosmetology school because it’s clear you don’t want to work for anyone. She was right, I didn’t. So I went back to hair school, and once I graduated. I opened Glo Up Studio in 2018.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients has been social media, mainly instagram and TikTok and also word of mouth.
