We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Holly Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Holly below.
Hi Holly, thanks for joining us today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
Each month I provide a free gift giveaway or private event for my clients, friends and family. We have done an assortment of fun giveaways: Chiefs paintings, a raffle for a big screen television, local restaurants, stores, and brewery gift cards, etc. My favorite free private event we put on every year for our clients is our Easter Egg Hunt. We have one hunt for the kids and a separate one for the adults. We put out over 2,000 Easter eggs each year.
For the adults, the eggs are filled with candy, lottery tickets, miniature liquor bottles and specialty prizes. For the kids, we hide one special golden egg for one lucky kiddo to find. The last two years we gave away a Nintendo Switch to the lucky kid who found the golden egg. My other favorite event we did was I teamed up with TD Scuba in Lee’s Summit and rented out the Longview Community pool where our clients, friends and family got to try scuba diving for the first time.
Anyone interested in joining our free rewards program is welcome to do so. We also have a fun Starbucks rewards program. When someone refers myself, or one of my agents, to a buyer and/or seller, they receive 6 months of free Starbucks on us.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My entire life God was preparing me for my career in real estate. I got into real estate 9.5 years ago after retiring from the police force. I have a heart for serving others and have a marketing background. I never sought out real estate as a career. It kind of just fell into my lap. When I heard the magic words, “The harder you work, the more successful you’ll be,” I was instantly hooked. I have always had a high work ethic and was looking for a career that would have benefits that coincide with my high career drive (In 2013, I was Lee’s Summit CARES Community of Character’s recipient for perseverance). Real estate was just that and more!
Two years into my career, I was rated the 25th top selling real estate agent in the mid-states region out of 931 agents. I was abundantly blessed and very proud of the work I was doing. Shortly after, I started my own team and continued to grow my business. In 2020, I was inducted into RE/MAX’s Hall of Fame. I am currently the co-owner of Key to KC Home Group powered by RE/MAX Heritage.
All of this became possible due to all the amazing people in my life who have continually referred me to their friends and family. I base all of my business on referrals. I am an expert at buying and selling houses, but I have found that people don’t just hire me for what I do, but for why I do it. The most important thing to me is to provide you a service that blesses you and your family. I will always put my client above myself, even if it is not in my best interest. Real estate is a commission-only world, however, I know when I lead with integrity and do what is best for my clients above all else, they will send every friend, family member and co-worker my way which is worth so much more!
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my business partner, Terri Gilgour, at RE/MAX Heritage. She too owned a real estate team and we both managed our business in a like minded way. It was very important to Terri and I to help agents grow in their careers. We try to make everything a teaching moment. No matter how long someone has been in real estate, you can always learn something. Between Terri and I, we have 26 years of experience in real estate. That provides us an abundance of life lessons to help others thrive and be more successful in this field.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When I first started in real estate I was still working full time as a police officer. I was working 100 hour weeks and sleeping 2.5 to 3 hours a night. I was determined to be successful in my new but very expensive career. Starting your own business isn’t cheap so I continued to work both jobs for several months until my business took off as a real estate agent and I was able to retire from the police department. It was very hard on my body but I am so very grateful that I pushed through.
