We recently connected with Katie Power and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I have ever worked on was my collection of singles I am releasing. It was originally supposed to be an EP but every song was so special to me that I decided to release them all as singles. This project is so special to me because I wrote all four of these songs myself. I was hands on in the production and my producer Spencer Gill, was one of the first producers that really got my vision. I was able to turn these songs I wrote in my dorm room to songs that you can blast in your car. These are the first of my songs to go through this transformation and tell my story, and I am so excited for more to come.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a singer/songwriter and I have been for as long as I can remember. I fell in love with words first. Telling stories about real life and real things became my way of processing things and connecting with the world. I got invested in music when my dad taught me how to play guitar. Some highlights from those lessons include me complaining the guitar was too big (I was 9) and me strangling the neck of my guitar in an attempt to play it. I love to perform and I feel most myself when I’m singing my own songs. I would love for anyone who has felt alone or felt inferior to look at my music because I am giving those feelings voices, I also have a brand new single “More” that comes out October 18th!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
It’s having the ability to say exactly what someone else is feeling but can’t put into words. To have a connection with people just through music. If someone comes up to me and compliments a song or a line I wrote, it’s special because as a songwriter I put a lot of heart into everything I write. Sometimes I am too hard on myself but moments like that are always special. Being acknowledge by peers and industry professionals is also very special. I was recently nominated for a Josie Music Award for “Single of The Year – Rock” and I am still filled with joy that a song I wrote is considered as one of the best rock singles of the year by an independent artist.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I had to stop and consider what I really wanted in music. For a lot of songwriters, a publishing deal is the ultimate goal. And I think I want that at some point, but I don’t have to want it now. I want to be an artist and a singer/songwriter. I want to write more than just music, and that is valid. I think the more I grow the more I learn it isn’t “all or nothing.” The art I create means so much to me and I want to own as much of it as I can for as long as I can. People always say “0% of 0 is still 0” but sometimes the sentimental value outweighs monetary value, and that is okay too.
