We were lucky to catch up with Karin Thyr Eriksson (aka the duo Thyra) recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Karin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As songwriters and musicians we have came across different genres and we have collaborated with a broad variety of creators. It’s always exiting and you always walk away with new inspiration. But sometimes it’s hard to motivate yourself to set aside time to focus and work on your own projects. There is always a deadline or something more pressing to tend to.
When we decided to write and record our latest EP Stockholm Tennessee we started by deciding a release date. We didn’t even have the songs. We just knew that if we didn’t give ourself a due-date it was most likely not going to happen.
Over the years we’ve had the pleasure to be a part of some amazing artists musical journey and that has been a fantastic experience.
We came back to Nashville for the first time since the pandemic over Christmas and new years and when we left we knew that we had a decision to make – we needed invest in ourselves, our music and our passion. And that was how the idea for a new EP started.
Karin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Both of us has worked as freelance musicians for 30 years. It’s been an amazing ride. The people we have met and the friendships that are formed because of years of playing together, hanging out back stage, in tour busses and just simply waiting around (ha ha) is hard to explain. When you find your self on stage, look around and realizes the people around you are, not only amazing musicians – but also the best friends you could ever ask for you can’t but feel truly blessed.
During the songwriting and recording process it’s necessary to open up and be vulnerable. Its scary but can be truly rewarding. Therefor bringing in long term friends and fellow musicians Micke Dahlén and Fredrik Landh for this EP project, was a no – brainer.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
The most rewarding aspect is when you hear from someone who has connected to your music in some way. That our music and lyrics has meaning and resonate with people. When people choose your song for a specific occasion – thats pretty cool!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
As a creator, of any sort, the most important thing is to share your message and stay authentic. In the early stages of a carrier it’s easy to listen to everyone else and pay too much attention to others opinions. Every time we have shifted away from others expectations and leaned in to what feels completely right it has moved us forward in some way. It’s pretty exiting. It should feel a little scary – but when you sit with it you know its the right move. Thats when the magic happens and you know that you have created something that will make a difference.
