We recently connected with VOSS & THINGS and have shared our conversation below.
VOSS & THINGS, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project we’ve worked on is In The Bag Productions. With nothing but passion, vision, and a desire to do things differently, we forged a beautiful community and boutique event production company based in San Diego that focuses on creating one-of-one experiences. Larger than a line-up, and much more than a dancefloor staring at a famous DJ, In The Bag puts the focus back on the people, whether they are dressing up to one of our outrageous themes, or connecting with like-minded individuals to the backdrop of a diverse array of house music genres. This project has given us a blank canvas to not only perform as VOSS & THINGS, but to also elevate those around us, giving them opportunities they might not have had before due to the political nature of the entertainment industry. It has also allowed us to allocate time and energy to different areas and further create and inspire within them – examples include art, technology, web3, and more. The interconnected web of self-expressive, thoughtful, and wild and whacky people that makes up The Bag is by far and away one of the most meaningful creations we have contributed to date.
VOSS & THINGS, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Layering live vocals atop eclectic track selections, American duo VOSS & THINGS removes the static from the scene. Blending lyrical tracks with house and techno deep cuts, VOSS & THINGS are here to make you feel and make you dance.
Sparked by a chance encounter on a San Diego dancefloor, friendship built the basis of what is now VOSS & THINGS. VOSS represents California-born singer, songwriter, and producer JENNY VOSS, who specializes in her own developing genre, Romantic House, and has released on labels including Hood Politics, Final Haus of Groove Bassment, Javi Bora’s Too Many Rules, CandyFlip Records, Music Is 4 Lovers, and more. THINGS derives from DBT, an acronym for Do Big Things, a seasoned DJ and global brand who has played and hosted experiential music & lifestyle events both home (Washington D.C., Miami, Las Vegas, San Diego, Joshua Tree) and abroad (Ibiza, Portugal, Mexico, Croatia, Italy) for over 12 years, driven to bring more intention to the scene.
United, they are VOSS & THINGS. Having performed together for EDC Week in Las Vegas, to headlining in San Diego and booking festivals in Alaska, this iconic duo has already played alongside notable artists such as Anna Lunoe, Cut Snake, Partiboi69, and Desert Hearts. VOSS & THINGS are on the verge of a bold expansion, focusing on bringing a differentiated experience to everyone on the dance floor, an experience full of surprise acts, WOW factors, and boundless sounds. If you want something new and different, join this eclectic duo as we all Do Big Things.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Developing a brand while simultaneously chasing dynamic dreams, passions, and inspirations is a recipe for a plethora of pivoting. One experience that stands out far from the rest is unequivocally at our first music festival, Salmonfest, in 2021, in Ninilchik, Alaska. We got booked on a whim to come out to Alaska for one of the state’s most popular blue-grass festivals. Yes, bluegrass. We traveled long and far to the beautiful state, with absolutely no idea what this house-duo from San Diego was getting themselves into. Originally, we were booked for a 1pm slot on day two at one of their smaller side stages. As we arrive and get settled on Day 1, the sun fades into the moonlight (~11pm), and as we lay in our RVs we notice green lasers from one of the main stages. About to go sleep, we muster the energy to walk over, and delightfully discover a couple thousand house heads, dancing the night away to some serious house music. Naturally we felt a bit more comfortable, and ended up staying on that dance-floor for the remainder of the night. Shortly after, a received a message from our festival contact letting us know that the headliner for Saturday night got stuck at the border due to COVID, and that they decided to move us into their slot. We were thrilled at the opportunity, freaked out because this crowd of thousands was the biggest we’d potentially ever played for, and a bit panicked because we had a “day time 1pm side stage set” prepared. From daytime melodic sounds to nighttime main stage energy, we had to undergo a major pivot in what we prepared and how we were to perform. By the first song, the dance-floor was full. By the last song, Jenny and Nate were crowd surfing. To this day, that was the biggest and best crowd we’ve ever played for, and one of the best experiences of our lives personally and professionally. An accidental mishap requiring a major pivot all leading to us headlining our first music festival in a state we’ve never been to, to a crowd that had mostly not heard of us.
After that set is actually the moment we decided to create VOSS & THINGS. It’s inspiring to think about how powerful a pivot can be.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
VOSS & THINGS are creators at our core, both individually and collectively. We try not to overthink or sink into comparisons, and keep our focus on growing, innovating, and inspiring. The goal is to ideate, create, reflect, repeat, for anything that aligns with our values and moves the needle on our passions. In parallel, where we put our energy must in some way make us better, others better, and the world better, no matter how big or small of a ripple it may effect. That is why you see us doing so many different things, from DJing, producing, and performing, to event production, community building, and curating international experiences for those closest to us. We believe that if we drive towards our passions with an intention to also empower and elevate everyone we work with and who is around us, that it will not only get us to our destination faster, but it will also help others do the same.
