We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matthew Enos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
In my earlier days of my career I was just doing this for fun and extra money. One day it came to me that maybe I should think bigger. I started to realize the more exposure I had the more opportunities came my way. I shifted my mind set and wanted to do this work full time. I started out with just a few agents in surrounding major cities closer to me. I hustled for a couple of years and pursued bigger agents in major markets and now I have established representation in over 25 major cities throughout the States. With this I have had access to many more opportunities and bookings. I’ve been blessed with some really neat jobs and meeting and making new friends while pursuing my dreams.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been a professional commercial model and actor for over twenty years. I started out small working in my local markets. Over the last decade I have expanded my work and opportunities throughout many major markets in the States. I have worked for some huge Company’s like Lands End ,Pepsi, Hallmark, Hyatt, Google, Lincoln, Kirklands, YankeeCandle, Garmin, Progressive, Wrangler,BassPro,Marriott, Samsung,Budweiser,FloridasNatural just to name a few. I believe I have gotten more confident in front of the camera and give the clients my best work to produce the best images or video they are wanting for their ads.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
This business is really competitive. While pursuing getting bookings you must learn to take rejection and learn from every experience. I audition and cast for many roles weekly and never get booked. You have to really love and have a passion for it to keep going. People see all the cool places I get to travel and work at but don’t realize the grind and persistence it took to get me there. You have to get tough skinned and be patient while pursuing your dreams. Never give up!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing to me is being able pursue this career and do it full time. I have never wanted to be stuck with a 9-5 type of job. I have always wanted to be independent and be in control of my career and successes. I love the grind and being independent.
