We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LaShanda Melton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi LaShanda, thanks for joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I definitely would have started my business sooner. I really started putting an effort in getting my work and name noticed in 2019/2020, essentially right before the pandemic. At the time I was working as a social worker and a therapist with some local hospitals. I really wanted to empower women to feel their absolute best & most beautiful. The look on a woman’s face when she sees herself & is satisfied with the outcome, is something I can not put into words, but when you love what you do, it does take your breath away. I originally began my journey in 2009. I was discouraged from being in the beauty industry, specifically a hairstylist by individuals that I love. I understood what their concerns were, but the trajectory that the industry has gone in is something I always knew could be. Starting sooner means that I would have been able to perfect my skills and craft way sooner without the stressors of my current daily life, as I am a single woman, working two jobs so that I can provide for my daughter. In saying that I definitely wish I had stayed true to myself, the path I was on, and started sooner.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am LaShanda A. Melton, a native of a small town by the name of Tifton in South Georgia. I was originally introduced to this industry by my mother, the late Ms. Cupree R. Melton. She was a braider and one of the best there was in our town in my younger years. I would assist her in braiding our clients hair. I still have some of the clients she introduced me to ask me do I braid hair. Ironically I do, but it is not my main interest in this industry. At this current time, I mainly make wigs and style them. I am currently navigating towards being a more well rounded cosmetologist which means, for me, that I would like to not only provide wig and hair piece services, but I want to provide natural styles with and without wefted extensions, I want to be able to care for the client’s hair so that it will reduce stress for them in caring for their own hair. I will be able to provide products & education of said products, advising what is best used for the texture and length of their hair as well as providing styling tutorials. I will ultimately be the vessel that God uses to solve those bad hair days, whatever that day looks like for my client. I will also provide soft skin finish makeup services as well as basic nail services. I believe along with those positive attributes & skills, what sets me apart is that I am genuine and I want to see people happy. I will provide a quality experience that will leave my client feeling empowered to conquer any task that may come her way while also giving her confidence throughout her day and days to come.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience is defined as the ability to recover quickly from difficulty. Resilience is my life’s theme as it has been marred with adversity, but I have remained resilient and persevered. I will admit that it has been quite difficult for me to break into this industry in my home town and be supported. I am entering the industry during a time where there are so many talented ladies and gentlemen who provide beauty services in my town, that it has been extremely difficult for me to find my target audience. There are days when I really want to donate all of my supplies and tools to some of my really good friends who are also in the industry and work with my brother Bryan who is a mortician, but I remember that I do it for MY clients. I have prayed and asked God to send me clients that He wants me to have, His people. At this time, my clients are few, they are Godly and spiritual women who pour into me, encourage me and although they may be few, they are mighty and they pray for favor over me and my business. I do look at this as a way of God telling me to continuously perfect my craft as He prepares more and more people to become supporters of my business. The race is not given to the swift or to the strong, but to the one that endures until the end. Ecclesiastes 9:11.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media and word of mouth have been the best source of new clients for me. I try to post consistently to my Instagram, so that people near and far are able to see my work and contact me via text if they are interested in any wig units, hair pieces, & products that I may have. I have so many inquiries from social media alone. Word of mouth has also been a way that I have been getting clients. So to the person who is reading this, if you feel that word of mouth is a pointless avenue to get you noticed and your brand out there, please understand that it is not. Just keep going.
