We recently connected with Brittany Waddell and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
A defining moment in my career happened during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. It was during that time, when the world literally shut down, that my Heath Coaching business, Watch Her Prep was born. At first I saw the lockdown as one of the lonliest experiences, but in hindsight, it was actually catapulted me into discovering my purpose. One lesson that I would glean from my story is that when negative situations blindside you, remember to find the silver lining, because there is always a silver lining. Shifting your perspective can change your life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I jokingly say, I’m a techie by day and a health enthusiast by night LOL. I work in tech, which I thoroughly enjoy, but I also LOVE heath and wellness. If starting a small business has taught me anything, it’s that life does not have to be either/or, it can most definitely be either/and. I have no plans to stop working in tech full time, as I continue to grow my business and champion women. As I’ve shared before, I officially embarked on my health and fitness journey in the Summer of 2019. That summer, I was the heaviest I had ever been and was truly unhappy with my weight. I had an annual physical and learned that I had high cholesterol. I was shocked and a bit alarmed, but it was not what prompted the change. My aunt died that summer from cancer, and I went home to North Carolina for her funeral. I hadn’t seen many of my extended family in months, some even years, and all they commented on was my size. Their comments, combined with the thoughts and feelings I already had about my weight, was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I honestly had no clue what I was going to do, I just knew I had to do something. One thing about me is that when I get a plan and a goal in mind, I make it a point to crush the goal. I embarked on a fitness challenge, which consisted of working out five days a week, and meal prepping weekly. I woke up every morning at 4 am and did cardio, and every day after work, I also worked out. I was on a mission.
Being physically fit is much more than looking great in your clothes, even though that is a plus, it’s about being alive and staying alive to live out your purpose and the call God has on your life. I refused to let a lack of discipline when it comes to food, of all things, steal my future and quality of life.
Watch Her Prep is a virtual Health Coaching business, solely for women. I work with women to help them lose weight by setting goals, creating plans, and holding them accountable. A huge focus that I work closely with my clients on is their mindset. Aside from your diet, your mindset can make or break whether or not you actually meet your goals. I used to be a School Counselor in a past life, and have a Masters in Counseling Psychology, so I love that I still get to use those skills, just in a different avenue. As I mentioned, diet is equally important. However, I do not sell meal plans. I empower women and give them their own tools to plan their meals and their daily movement, for themselves. I’ve learned that the only way to see true, sustainable, change is to make the change a lifestyle change.
My initial thought process behind starting Watch Her Prep was basically how can I help people reach their health and wellness goals. I felt as if I had unlocked a secret of life in a sense, when I reached my goals. I had increased energy, much more focused, innate happiness, and just pure joy. Being healthy is much more than looking good in clothes or a swimsuit, to me, it is feeling your best, on the inside. I wanted to share this feeling and process with other women. Much like myself, I knew there were so many women who were unhappy due to their weight, and had no clue where to start. I wanted to simplify it for them, and essentially show them that they are strongAF, and can do anything. It starts with habit change and the pure willingness to start.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been transparency. I am not coaching clients on something that I have not gone through myself. I keep it real with them, and I meet them where they are. I believe that being yourself and putting your all into every client, to personalize their experience, will always be the most effective strategy.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During the last year, I took a break from Watch Her Prep. I was not motivated or inspired to coach clients or share my journey. I felt as though I was not in the best place to coach, since I wasn’t even being consistent with my own wellness routine. However, those are the moments resilience is born. It’s okay to take breaks and gather yourself, then get back up stronger and wiser. I have revamped my coaching program, but most importantly, I got back to Brittany.
