We were lucky to catch up with Nicole Bills recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Three years ago, I began having clients that challenged my understanding of what can ultimately help them to expand and improve their lives. This timely experience coincided with the time that my youngest child entered his sophomore year of high school. I suddenly had more time to reflect on myself outside of the constant wearing of the “mom” hat. I began to sit with (read: panic over) who I was, and what I was doing and questioning whether I was as helpful as I thought at guiding people.
At this point in my career, I was only using, “top-down” mental processing techniques to guide others in understanding their relationships, communication patterns, self-worth, and how they learn & behave. I took a step off the traditional path that had been set long ago at university and entered the realm of “bottom-up” techniques that focused on somatic understanding.
Taking the time to study these methods that encourage a relationship between the mind, body, and brain took me in a whole new direction. It changed the way I, myself, showed up in my own life and provided an opportunity to reexamine how I help my clients.
The chaos of self-reflection fundamentally altered the trajectory of my career and the way I guide my clients now. I am forever grateful for that difficult season of change because it has taught me how to create more ease and empowerment in my client’s healing journeys.
Great, we appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My parents have always said that it has been apparent, even from a young age, that my life path was to guide and heal others. They loved regaling people with stories of me, at the tender age of four, sitting in a closet trying to heal my blind puppy with divine energy, or how in my teenage years I tried to show my teammates how they can heal their physical pain with visualizations.
I put all of that aside to follow a more traditional route in college and earned a degree in education and psychology. At the age of 20, I started building a career in teaching people how they learn, communicate, and understand why they may behave in certain ways in their relationships.
But in 2019, a full 21 career years later, I took a year off to delve even deeper into my learning; studying ancient ways of energy healing, the reinforcing power of rituals, and tapping into intuition growth through tarot and dream interpretations.
These intricately woven threads of my experiences & education, which at the time may not have seemed to align, now come together perfectly to create what is now my life’s work, guiding women to find their clarity, alignment, & joy in their lives.
What makes my process unique is that instead of searching for a way to calm the chaos surrounding life, I teach how to find the calm within it.
My specialty is in guiding people on a “YES, and…” journey. I provide them with broader incorporation of ancient magik and modern methods to become grounded in the present-moment awareness, teaching how to expand acceptance of the self, regulate their physical, emotional, and cognitive sensations, & bring a sense of connection to their mind-body-energy as a whole.
Every session is an incredible gift that I get to witness clients become more empowered in releasing and reframing old patterns on their journey of healing and self-discovery.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
What seems to be a consistent life lesson for me to unlearn, in new ways every year, is releasing the idea that I should have it all figured out. I don’t need to have an answer for everything and have a perfectly balanced life. Being a wife, mom, and business owner has taught me to accept that there are seasons in life, as mercurial as the weather. Each one leads to an essential understanding of when it is time for me to “sit, be still and listen” or “stand up and shift”. Now, I find myself being ok with the phrases, “I don’t know… let’s get curious about it”.
I am finding opportunities where I can counterbalance my time rather than struggle to attain the impossible standard of looking like I have it all together.
Each time I release the attachment to an old belief and show up authentically as me in that season, I find that it becomes the most trusted resource for teaching others.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
In my experience, with any business that I’ve built, building a reputation has been the easier, albeit, slower step. Getting your first client to fully trust you when you are unknown in the industry is harder. To accomplish that, I took a lot of time offering free services to the community and showing up for speaking engagements, despite being afraid of public speaking.
By pivoting and creating a new iteration of my business, I have recently learned that those questions of “who I am” and “who I am not” can and should be reasked, at least with each new season of life.
This reflection time is a crucial step that helps define the boundaries that will structure a solid and sustainable reputation. Knowing what my limits are, allows my “yes” to mean “yes” and my “no” to mean “no”.
The rest is about taking the necessary self-care time needed to show up and being fully present for every client’s session.
