We were lucky to catch up with Kizra Deon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kizra, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Being a Creative/Artist is the best thing for me since sliced bread, I love what I do everyday and there is no other career or job in the world that can replace this or tempt me to switch it out. However, I have to remix this answer for this question because I do have a 9-5 job and I juggle them both daily, but when you are doing something you love and something you know you were born to do, its not work! My 9-5 job is just a means to fund my dream and there is a method to my madness. I however, never let the job come between the craft/passion because the goal is to get off the job permanently and that is the goal I am working towards so that my Gift as an Actor can and will make room for me for life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Kizra Deon is a Mother, Creator, Entrepreneur and best known as an Actor, who has been married to The Arts specifically through Drama and Dance since the tender age of 6 years old. After relocating from my hometown, Miami FL, going on 4 years now, I have found a grounded career in Atlanta, GA pursuing my dreams of being an Actor. The love for the Arts began very young in Elementary school competing and winning in Oratorical contest, and reciting poems in class, which led to doing church plays with no fears at all. My mother enrolled me into an Arts Center at 7 years old (The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center) in the heart of Liberty City and that is where the Art, Gift and Talent was groomed and took off. The stage became my safe place and where I could release every inhibition and “JUST BE”. I knew that this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life, and I did…I went on to doing Theater in Middle and High School, I was a Thespian in the PAVAC Drama program at my high school Miami Northwestern Sr. High, where we put on a number of shows and competed in numerous competitions around the city and state. I have done a host of Film/TV work throughout my adult life and the passion for Acting is still standing strong. I can currently be seen on the streaming App “Tubi” where I play the Lead in a TV series called “The Transporter” written and directed by Silk White. Season 2 will be out by the end of the year. I also star in a WebSeries called “To Each His Own” airing on YouTube, Seasons 1 & 2 are out now and Season 3 will be out very soon. I love what I do and I am thankful and grateful to God that I am able to do what I love on a daily basis. I have recently finished writing a Feature Film and am working on several other works including; TV series, short films and stage plays. I also have an online Earring business called EAR_re_SIS_tible geared towards ALL women, “If you lend me your ear, I will be sure to change your Mood” I believe there are no limits in what you do and if you are consistent and diligent, all of your dreams will come true!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an Actor is being able to “JUST BE”. Many times we wish we can escape and go somewhere physically to get away, but being an Actor allows me to mentally do just that with each new character role I play. I become the character and let their story live through me and at that moment, I am no longer Kizra and that for me is an escape from my own reality into a world of endless possibilities.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Back in October of 2012, I lost my first born son, he was 2 years old and passed away. That was a pivotal moment in my life and also a time in my life where I realized that we don’t have forever. We think that time waits for us but it doesn’t, and that sparked a fire in me that has allowed me to be consistent, resilient and hungrier than ever on my journey as an Actor. I don’t have an Agent and although, I have been before many and submitted to many, I thank God for the many opportunities I have been blessed with being my own agent and I won’t ever stop, agent or not.
