We recently connected with Scott Dorsey and have shared our conversation below.
Scott, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I think of getting a day job all the time. As an artist you are the accountant, marketing, business manager, social media. You wear all the hats. It gets over whelming. So, you can be tired out from all the other stuff which make it hard to be creative and do what you really want to do. When business deals or print sales don’t go the way you except you start to wonder. Things start adding up and you get to the point where you are like F it, it would be easier to clock in do your job and clock out. As an example of things happening. I did 2 paintings for the new Raiders stadium. One was of head coach at the time Jon Gruden. Everyone loved it and was shown on ESPN. The Raiders were going to make prints of the painting and I would get commission off the prints. Mid-season scandal comes out and Gruden is fired. Prints are not being made and the painting is removed from the stadium. It seems to always be one step forward and two steps back. So, when things like that happen over and over you start to wonder. I just push through and keep painting.

Scott, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a self-taught artist. I do sports art and also family portraits. I use oil paint. Art has been my full-time job for about 6-7 years now, but I have started my art business on the side since 2009. Thats was the first time I started selling my art. I Started painting football players and taking them to shows. I have been drawing my whole life. In middle school and high school, I would draw comic books and wrestlers.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
You need to support your friends or family. Not just artist, if your friend has a business, buy something. You don’t know what the go through day to day. Don’t ask for discounts. You could give them the confidence of continuing or quitting.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
They are not for me. I don’t understand them. I’ve had so many people ask me to do them. I actually was going to start but that fell through. As it was explained to me it’s an image you own on your phone, and in the cloud. I don’t trust the cloud. I also like to own the physical thing. Like an original painting. You can hang it up and show it off in your house not just show off your phone. I like traditional art.
