We recently connected with Katherine Peters and have shared our conversation below.
Katherine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I’m MUCH happier working on creative projects than at a “regular job”. I’ve been able to focus full-time on my jewelry since I got laid off from my most recent “regular job” two years ago. I had been working on Handscapes Jewelry part-time for five years before this happened, and although of course there are benefits to working for someone (and with other people!), it definitely cut into the time and energy that I had to spend on my own work.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Hi, hello! I’m Katherine Peters / Handscapes Jewelry. This is a one-woman operation, and I design and hand-fabricate each piece from start to finish.
I create silver and gold jewelry, plant/hair forks and wall decor with minimalistic, clean designs. A lot of my work focuses on nature and the powerful symbolism that it exudes. I design my jewelry to be a combination of statement pieces and everyday wear, and they are designed with the intention to make the wearer feel powerful and protected. The act of picking out and putting on your jewelry is a personal and empowering ritual, and I feel very strongly that the everyday items you choose and surround yourself with have the power to affect you in the best of ways. There is a profound comfort that comes from wearing pieces that are hand-fabricated and made with passion and love. I work very hard to make that evident in the pieces I create.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the best way to support the local community is to put your money where your mouth is. Shop local, support small businesses, be conscious of where you’re spending your dollars and show up in the ways you can. This city has so much happening, and so many creative people living here. A lot of us live here for those reasons. Buy the band shirt, adorn yourself and your home with handmade work. You’ll feel the difference.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect for me is that it never gets boring and it never gets old. Thanks to this business, I’m now a jeweler, designer, photographer, videographer, content creator, copywriter, bookkeeper, events coordinator, office manager, financial director, branding coordinator and website designer. I love getting to focus on every different aspect of what needs to be done to keep my company running smoothly. On top of that, I get to draw, design, create, play with beautiful stones and bring my ideas to life. It’s a lot, and I love it.
