We were lucky to catch up with Giselle Climpson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Giselle , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The biggest risk I’ve taken was relocating to a new city with a really big dream, and not a really big budget. I’ve always been an open-minded artistic individual, but where I’m from, that status isn’t really a visible option or life path. You’re either this, or that, but never are you celebrated for creating your own lane. Mostly because the type of life path you have for yourself is something only you can see, the individual, the creator.
I was wrapping up my undergraduate coursework and I knew that I would need hands-on training to be competitive in the industry of fine arts, writing, and communication. I didn’t realize I would need to have a drastic change of scenery, but I knew that was the only way I’d be able to make an impact.
When I relocated to Georgia, I was entering graduate school and I used my status and financial backing of being a military dependent scholarship recipient as leverage to make it in Atlanta.
Little did I know, that leap of faith would be the first major step on the path to not only my destiny, but living my dream life.
Giselle , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an Artist, the true definition of a Modern-Day Renaissance Woman.
I’ve learned over the years that it is more important to celebrate the essence of who you are, not what you do.
My goal is to inspire people to bring their most authentic selves forward and to lead with no limits in mind.
I am a black founder, creator, writer, consultant, poet, dancer, creator, angel investor into black art and businesses, Wife, Fur Mom, sister-friend, a well-rested and properly loved black woman, an avid storyteller– but above all, I am an Artist.
I’m most proud of finding my own voice and being heard via my platform — OnGiselleAve.com.
I started blogging back in 2011, at a time where blogging wasn’t even considered a credible media outlet and this same platform has afforded me countless opportunities to share and express my passion for the Arts.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To me, it’s being exactly who you say you are.
Once upon a time, we were forced into boxes of identity and we all had to live our lives as NPC (non-player characters) — but there’s always a select few that decide to do what they want, when they want.
Those who live outside of the box, we are the rebels that will soon transform the way we conduct our lives.
As an artist, you don’t have to fit in and your individuality is what makes you, you!
Whether your hairstyles, your wardrobe, your interests, or how you choose to communicate — art is a lifestyle that has no bounds.
I love it here.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Pay us what we say we’re worth, even though art is priceless.
This is why I fully support the NFT movement, it’s time to put some respect on the true culture curators of society: artists.
I’m all for a simple share or retweet on social media but you need to pay artists for their magic.
Nowadays, I’ve replaced the word “work” with “magic” because that’s exactly what it is.
Amplify the voices and magic of those that are not only underrepresented, but those that are not represented at all.
Place our art in very public places, but also pay us for our time and attention.
Don’t just use artists, encourage them by investing your money and/or chosen currency into their craft.
Art is the now and the future and will soon reign supreme over conventional avenues towards success so get ahead of this culture shift by investing in artists you know– right now.
Don’t wait until the big wigs recognize the artist, support them right now by investing.
