We recently connected with Elyse Dickerson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Elyse thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own business.
I started my business with my business partner, Joe, in 2015 after leaving a corporate job in big pharma. We talked to many doctors in many fields to see what unmet need was present in the market. It turned out, earwax impaction was a big problem with no innovative solution. We decided we could fill that gap and created our first product, EARWAX MD. Now, we have a full line of ear care products in over 13K stores nationwide and growing. We manufacture our products in house, which allows us to be agile and grow quickly. Manufacturing doesn’t come without its challenges though, and often COVID supply chain issues cause unwanted delays. My advice to young professionals looking to start their own business is to know that you can’t do it alone. Accept help and ask for help when you need it.
Elyse, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got my start in big pharma after grad school, working in the eye care industry. I worked for 13 years before leaving and starting my own business in 2015 with my business partner and longtime friend and colleague, Joe. Since we knew the healthcare space well, we decided to address an underserved need and launch an ear care brand. I am now CEO of Eosera, Inc. and we manufacture and sell ear care products that address issues like earwax impaction, ear hygiene, ear pain, ear itch, and ear irrigation. Currently, we are the only ear care brand with a full portfolio of products that address these specific needs.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Other than training/knowledge, the most helpful qualities for succeeding in entrepreneurship is resilience, self-awareness, and positivity. Without these things, it is difficult to get back up after getting knocked down by challenges and obstacles that inevitably come.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
A time when I had to pivot was when I was fired from my job after 13 years. I got a FedEx letter in the mail one morning and I was devastated. But, after picking myself up and dusting myself off, I knew I had choices to make. I chose to start my own business, and it was the biggest pivot I’ve ever made.
